Robert Kronfeld called the Hortens after the war and asked to borrow the glider. The Hortens agreed, and Kronfeld showed up with C-47 to pick it up and fly it to England. After Kronfeld was killed, Geoffrey de Havilland Jr somehow took possession of it. After he got killed, it went to Hollis Button who brought it to the USA. How they managed to manufacture an ownership title for a loaned glider is not known to me.

Sascha Heuser (Berlin) hat ein exakt-Replika nachgebaut. Ab 5:09 sieht mann sein Arbeit. Nuer Luftfahrtnorm-materialen sind benutzt worden. (GL-1 Aeodux TvBU-7?) Das Flugzeug ist flugwertig, aber nicht alle Zertifizierungs Papieren sind da. Fliegen kann es sicher, und wie. Ein grossartige Leistung! -Sorry fuer mein Deutsch. -

Well worth the restoration even if it doesn't fly. Without the restoration you couldn't appreciate the sublime shape, blue prints can't do it justice. Too risky to gamble the life of the pilot. A RC flying scale model is the way to go if you want to test it's flying characteristics.

I was hoping someone would build a modern version of this amazing sailplane. Using current materials. How would it compare to a standard cruciform sailplane in performance? I would like to think it would perform better. To my knowledge this Horten glider might be the best plane ever made. It’s certainly one of the prettiest.

This is not the best version of the wing. The horton brothers made multiple successor gliders, and eventually a jet engine model. And the jet was similar but not the same. Leading me to believe they improved upon the glider.

This is not from CA, but from the 1952 glider nationals in Grand Prairie, TX. The commentator is June Wiberg. The pilot was my father, Rudy Opitz. The glider had been bought by a British test pilot (Hollis Button) from Geoffrey de Havilland who had acquired it after the war. Button crashed it, and my father repaired it for him in exchange for being able to fly it for all of the 1952 contest season. Afterwards, the glider went to Mississippi State University for performance tests, and then sat more or less abandoned for many years. It now hangs from the rafters in a poorly restored shape at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, CA.

This must be Mike or Marty Optiz - Hey you guys, it's John Boyce from San Jose. It just so happens that Hollis Button used to live a few miles away from me, here in the South Bay. Your Dad told me about him, sent me his address but had no idea that he lived nearby, nor that he was even alive. He had some cool pics of the Horton, along with some other paperwork as well. I asked if we could make copies but he refused. Anyway, your Dad was absolutely floored when I told him that I had met Hollis Button. What a trip! JDB

According to the book " Nurflugel" from R Horten this glider have been stolen from Germany, it was suposely to be returned to owners - as a civilian glider - aparently it flew US National sailplanes contest then ... ???

This looks EXACTLY like NASA's new PRANDTL glider meant for a drone mission on mars... Revolutionary wing design my ass NASA. You just copy pasting like everyone else. Nothing new under the sun...
Wow, I had no idea about the history of this design concept. I'd never heard of or seen anyone flying a glider with this wing configuration before the Hortons. Thanks for the clarification. Very interesting article on bell shaped lift distribution too... why is it not really used today in aircraft design if it's so much more efficient I wonder?
@rossclements88747 жыл бұрын
I don't really know, here is the thread started by one of the guys who works on it www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2055116-Prandtl-d
@HangGlidingSouthAfrica7 жыл бұрын
Yea, that thread concurs with my original assessment... prandtl only came up with the concept... no small feat in itself... but the hortons were the ones who realised that you could do away with the tail section alltogether as well as do away with the issue of adverse yaw. They were the first to use the idea on swept wings... so still their innovation really... thanks for the additional info though. I'm really interested in using the BSLD in my next build... I love the efficiency and "simplicity" of flying wings
