Y'all are lucky you decided to do the trip when you did, currently, Labrador City is surrounded by wildfires and the TLH is completely shutdown from Labrador City to Churchill Falls, with a fire being 5km from Churchill. I believe there is also a fire near the Manic-5 hydro facility.

Wow, that's a shame. Yes we definitely lucked out and didn't even see any smoke the whole trip.

When at the Two Hearted River State Campground check out the inside walls of the wood outhouses. Then have beautifully stained Oriented Strand Board (OSB). It looks beautiful with the skylight.

Your day three hike from Woodl to the Sawyer-Goodwin campsite is probably the hardest place to hike in that wilderness. It is the reason the McCormicks and Bentleys built the 1200' boardwalk across the west bay of Bulldog Lake. Another reason the McCormicks/Bentleys built their dam to replace Sam Reedy's dam was to keep Bulldog lake. In the independent report commissioned by the US Forest Service about the McCormick Experimental Forest, Fred Rydholm spoke of Bulldog lake only being 6 or 7 feet deep.
@fortunebay8 ай бұрын
The blowdowns from the recent storms really beat us up, just so much time and energy spent climbing over tangles of fallen trees or finding ways around them. It was quite different from our hike the year before when the woods were more open. Circumnavigating the two main lakes didn't leave us a lot of options to pick an easier route, and we're glad we did it once but probably won't do that route again.

The loggers dam, Sam Reedy's dam was wooden, its remains are visible further south in that channel. The cement dam was built in 1914 by the McCormick/Bentleys. They would drop the water level In winter to help prevent the ice heaves on the boat house on White Deer Lake. All those forget me nots came from one package planted in the 40s by the super intendents wife outside their cabin. Shows how far invasive species go. Going in the the McCormick in June is brave, I made that mistake once. The Bentleys and the McCormicks refused to visit in June because the bugs were so bad. Cryus McCormick had frogs brought in to try to eat them. The big foundation was for the dining cabin it burnt down in 1947. It was never rebuilt. Gordon McCormick last visited in 1942. Back in the day there was a staircase to the top of the fortress. White Deer Lake was originally called Fortress lake. Great videography I like how you identify the plants.

Thanks for all the interesting info. Hiking up the river valley, I find it hard to imagine logs ever being able to float down it. The bugs were persistent but after a while we just sort of got used to them, and the wipe-on picaridin definitely helped. As a last-minute thought I stuffed the Thermacel into my pack and we were thankful for it in camp as it provided a small zone that was mostly bug-free.

Your campsite on Bulldog lake was not only the official starting point of the Bentley trail to the Huron Mountain club but it was first where the Sawyer Goodwin logging company had their office. That Cabin was later used by one of their employees and his wife and child. The cabin was later removed and there was a garden on the spots to grow food to be served at Woodl. It is interesting that everyone climbs the acropolis while ignoring castle Rock. Castle Rock is key point on the old maps for hiking distances. Not that anything would be left but I believe Castle Rock is where they built the gazebo.
@fortunebay8 ай бұрын
We were planning to climb Castle Rock too, and possibly some of the other hilltops. But by the time we were done at the Acropolis it was getting late in the day so we had to move on to reach our campsite before the rain set in. If we return to that area we'll try for some of the other hilltops.

That well defined trail to Bulldog lake is the OG Bentley trail, it went al, the way to the Huron Mountain Club completely through the wilderness.
@fortunebay8 ай бұрын
Yeah we briefly followed another piece of it to the north on our last day, but there's not much evidence left of it in the less-traveled areas.
@KellysCanoeing8 ай бұрын
Very cool, that first foot bridge was not there three years ago. Finding the bridge from the old Bentley trail is a score. First time I've seen modern photography of that bridge. The McCormicks and Bentleys knew every inch of that land, their trails followed the best routes, easiest and best views/scenic spots. I believe the book Superior Heartland shows the bridge with a doctor and his his wife hiking from 100 years ago.

Enjoyed your video very much. We were there a year before you. I see QR 389 hadn’t improved but at least it keeps the numbers down on the TLH. We missed a few places you found so it was nice to see these. You missed a few gems too which you can see in our story if you’re interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKDGaJxth56NnaMsi=FNaxz8T37BBVxc9a Thanks for sharing and happy onward travels.

Making me homesick. Spent a lot of time along the L. Superior shoreline picking agates and camping plus in the fall it's a good area for grouse aka partridge. I'm old and hate cold now so I live on the coastal bend of TX. Great video really get a feel for what this area is like.

My wife drove out to Crisp Point in the middle of winter not knowing that it was a snowmobile trail only in the winter months.. Her and our four daughters buried their rig and had to hike to the lighthouse area where there was luckily a emergency phone as the cellphone service is not existent out there. I had to drive out with our fully locked and winched Jeep to get her and the girls out. Years back some older ladies got stranded out there and I believe they survived on Girl Scout cookies. Lol

Unrelated to this video, but almost 10 years ago I was in the sturgeon river valley and rather deep in the cedar swamp. I saw something tucked under a tree and it was a ziplock bag with some FBET stuff. Completely randomly recognized the logo while scrolling.
@fortunebay Жыл бұрын
Interesting, I assume it fell out of someone's pack or pocket. That was before I (Jay McClellan) joined FBET so I'm not sure who was up there back then, but we did spend some time around the Sturgeon River last year during our Spring Warmup trip (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZS2nWmnp9mHd8U).

That looks like an amazing route! I'm curious, if you have been to Amy Falls, in the drone footage we could see what looked like a white structure, maybe an open framework for a large tent. It was maybe 50 meters into the woods on river left just upriver from the falls. Do you have any idea what that is?

If you're anywhere near the Michigan area, or might travel here someday, you can find out more and join us at fortunebay.org. We're just in the planning stages of our adventures for the coming year. If you're too far away from us, meetup.com is one way to find local groups in your area.

@@CM102888 Most of our members are from the lower peninsula, and the team started in Kent County so we have quite a few in that general area, but we have members as far away as eastern Ontario. You are certainly within a reasonable driving distance of many of our "local" events, and closer to the U.P. than most of us.
