Period violin is an instrument that is set up in a similar way that it would have been during the time the music being performed was composed, in this case, the early 19th century - Paganini played on a violin with gut strings, no chinrest or shoulder rest, and used a classical/transitional bow.

very impressive! genuine question- wouldn’t paganini have been using a more or less modern bow? i thought he owned a tourte and a eury among others. my understanding was that paganini would have more or less been using modern instruments except for the strings and the setup/accessories but i could be wrong

My understanding is that Paganini owned transitional bows, and would have played on a violin with gut strings, without a chinrest or shoulder rest. The 24 Caprices were composed early in the 19th Century, probably during the first decade, although they were published only in 1820.
