bruh... the way they aesop'd was a bit roundabout but still nice. While they didn't swap back, and it felt a bit forced, the ending was cute.

I watched this when I was a 10 year old boy in the Eng Wah Cinema in Clementi back then. Remember the theatre to be one ridden with mosquitoes and cockroaches, although the air con was great. I think as I grew older, I began to truly understands many of the themes that were echoed by the movie producers. I think the overarching theme shows the fragility and fatalism of the great prosperity that Asia has underwent in the 80s and 90s, when a lot of industry and MNCs shifted from the West to Asia. It was almost a ‘roaring 20s’ moment like that depicted in the Great Gatsby. As long as you were willing to work hard and with a bit of luck, money would come, and it would come in large quantities for many as there was such a surge in demand for services in Asia in that era, even today. However, as fast as that money was able to come, it was just as easy for it to be lost, as seen in the cases of many of the characters in the movie; one major life event out of the blue, one accident, one poor financial decision and it was absolutely over. It showed an unsustainable growth in wealth marked by apathy, greed and ignorance. People became millionaires overnight, and millionaires became loan shark victims overnight as well. People didn’t know what to do with all the money that they suddenly came into contact with; many gambled, others drank, and perhaps the rest were a bit lucky and grew their wealth. There’s so much to unpack in this movie if you understand the Singaporean context of life and how the country has been shaped by globalisation, change in attitudes and perspectives etc. It will always be one movie that will linger in my mind for the rest of my life

I watched this movie many times over the years, it gave me different feelings as my age grew. Somehow when you get older you will get more connected to the story, especially if you're someone born before 1990s. Great movie.
