I know this is armchair quarterback, but it would have been better to get the fire in the field put out before the combine. If there was wind it would have gotten completely out of hand

lost the machine , but I see lots of acreage still to cut . Hope neighbours could come to help. Sorry for this to happen , unfortunately it is that time of year when these combines decide to to cause this failure

How is it life changing? You call implant they bring you a rental. You collect insurance that covers rental costs and the combine.

There is no substitute for one or two 2.5-gallon water extinguishers on your combine. Dry chemical extinguishers are pretty useless in this environment.

Why is it, that anytime I see a combine fire…it’s on a green machine?!? Engineers might want to figure that out. This event may have ruined the year and the business of this farmer. Hate to see it… please figure it out J Deere

JD 9600 series is prone to engine fires. Drone did not get close enough to see th model number.

been there, done that with an older machine. Once the adrenaline wears off it leaves a huge pit in your stomach. Ours burned for 6 weeks after that, no matter how much water/etc. we dumped on it (full grain bin just smoldered).

Very said. Yet. A few years ago. It came out that the new high-tech ones were designed to do this to the farmer. I put out warnings. No one wanted to hear about it. People are so happy to have the high-tech to do the work for them. Why they did not want to listen. Did that cause this one. I will not assume. I am just passing on the information. For the very last time. Never again. It's the seniors themselves that monitor everything. Their technology is in many different ways extremely dangerous. A prevention is. Keep all of the seniors cleaned and maintained. Then. Good luck. So sad. Not again.

Sorry to be negative. First so sorry for the farmer that lost a very expensive piece of machinery. Ok as a farmer and volunteer firefighter is see a very disorganized fire response no tankers the brush truck drives right by the ground fire and it seems like these guys didn't have a clue what to do combine fires a hot and nasty but fighting them from. The truck isn't a good idea they can explode. Also when fight this kind of fir e time is of the essence. Looked like they were on scene quite a while before they acted. I wasn't there but we would have had a much bigger and faster response here in my state hope everybody was ok.

We've been doing this since 1942, we are very experienced with this sort of fire. Safety is the very first concern. Tankers were on the road, the brush truck (1 of 2 on scene) was making way to clear a path for engine to fight combine fire. We use CAFS onall our engines and brush trucks and fighting from the truck with limited personnel is a great way to fight the fire safely. You as a volunteer should know what the personnel situation is these days. If not fighting from the truck what would you do? Pull hand lines where personnel can be closer to the explosions? If yo watch this long enough and really Analize it you will see a very well organized response. As for how long we were on scene, water on the fire within six minutes is pretty good. Shame on you for criticizing other volunteers for what they do for free. You as a volunteer should know better, you were not there. I would never do that to you.

In Australia you can't harvest without a fire appliance in the paddock with you, this could be a water tank and pump on the back of ute or trailer and some farms have bought old fires trucks. There is also restrictions depending on the weather, if it is very hot, windy and low humidity then you are not allowed to harvest

In USA They do have fire extinguishers on most machinery. There are over 2,00,000 farms here, these fires are rare and basically not significant loss. Additional regulations dragging around a water tank would be useless and expensive. Not to say that a farm fire isn't bad for that farmer- but most of the country is unaffected- and the additional expense of dragging around water trucks would be hugely expensive and not very useful. It happens rarely- with minimal losses- the USA is much wetter and greener than Australia other than the Western forests- but that's not farmland.

I'm sure they have full coverage and crop insurance for the loss of corn and combine. Every combine fire I have ever responded to, the farmers are ALWAYS more concerned with us saving the crop over the combine.

@@justin51986 lol, thats funny. The crop is most important because that's their bank account. The price of a combine in 2018 compared to 2023, has doubled. Awesome, your 300k combine was insured for x amount, now they are 600k. Hope you can pay off the old combine with check and then afford the new one. Im not even getting into the head unit. Trust me, this is life changing to every farmer. Money going out, when money is supposed to be coming in, changes every account book, and not for the better

There are plenty, fire wasn't big enough or out of control. Plenty of manpower and water. Foam was utilized on both the combine and stalks for a fairly quick knockdown.

You know why most of the time they're green it's because most of the combines are green. John Deere accounts for six out of every ten combine sold and all the other manufacturers squabble over the last 40%.

Deere makes one of the worst combines of all for grain quality as well. Not to mention they sow a beans the field, and now the fields look like a cover crop was planted. Go figure.@@deannelson9565

That sucks . It seems every year at harvest times machines are caughting fire. I wonder why they dont have some type of fire suppression system like a pre mix CAFS out inthe field with them. All the farmers have fuel trailers and maybe have it mounted on them

Some of the new fuel trailers a n d grain arts do. This was half way down the field and from what I hear the alarm was going off then fully involved as he got out the cab. Speculate hydraulic line broke and sprayed on manifold.

There are aftermarket systems like the Australian 'Muster 2 fire suppression system for combines and tractors. I have heard a combine operator mention (i have yet to find the maker) there is also an extra monitoring system that can be added to combines/ other machines (for example) to alert the operator if a gearbox seal fails or gearbox drain plug falls etc. In the worst fire-risk places, harvest is halted till conditions have less risk. In dusty conditions combines can stop every half hour for dust/ chaff blowoffs. I saw a report a few years ago that 30 combines had been lost in one season to fire in just one part of a State.

UNLESS some kind of on board system could be mounted on the machine it wont do much good if its on your fuel trailer it would take to long to get it to the fire .In a combine fire if you don't catch it in the smoldering stage by the time you notice the fire ,get the machine shut down,get someone to the fuel trailer,get the trailer to the fire ,get the system going probably a minimum of 5 minutes best case scenario .In that amount of time it's way out of control. I was on a rural Iowa fire dept. for 25 yrs. and I farm always thought to myself if your going to save the machine you'll have to do it yourself because by the time you call 911 and the fire dept gets there it will be totaled.Thats not bashing the FD its just fact .Pile some field trash rubber plastic oil and diesel fuel in a pile and light it and see what you have in 5 minutes you'll see what I mean

@timhuddleson3614 I was on this department for 42 years so well versed with field/equipment fires. Portable systems can be great for early caught bearing fires but other than that I have rarely seen much equipment saved. As far as the field goes, standing corn/beans don't really spread as fast as harvested ground. Then really only losing nutrients and have heavier weed pressure in the spring.

Whatever started the fire it was clearly burning for a fairly decent amount of time before he got stopped. by looking at the spot Fires at set for the last hundred and fifty yards upwind.

It's very unfortunate but if you are a farmer you know it can happen anytime. I volunteered for this fire department for 42 years and I think they got a good knockdown once they cold get past field fire. Unfortunately this one spread fast even with a distance from town of 4 miles was still totaled.
