I was a closeted (yet rumored to be and bullied for it) gay kid in a southern town where you weren't that if you knew what was good for you. I lived with my mother who was physically, mentally and emotionally abusive...the epitome of a narcissist. I first heard this song around that time, and amazingly it didn't drag me down deeper. Instead it held me in place. The ambience of the music centered me, like being in a dark grey room with no windows, and it felt cathartic in some ways. His voice pierced that dim room and wrapped me in a cloak that helped seal and cover my pain. It protected me, because through this song...I had a place to sit with it in a sort of rest. Not peace, because more trauma was yet to come, but a quiet corner to breathe a moment in the dark.....to be comfortable in those breaths. And I survived that time. I'm 45 now, and I survived. I score 10 out of 10 on the ACE Test...but I survived. My wounds are healed, though they are scars. The ones who wounded me the deepest are now dead, and the weight of their cutting lashes is lifted. This song remains, as put there by me, cut intricately into my soul. I reach in and gently touch that scar. I smile in retrospect.....and I thank Trent Reznor to this day.
