So, are you guys [in the video] happy with the sound quality of this zoom interview? I am not. Zoom is a curse as far as quality of sound and picture is concerned. This same interview could have been done so much better with Irshad in a studio, or even at home on a one-to-one basis with uncluttered sound and video recording. He could have demonstrated on Sitar or Surbahar what he meant as he spoke and explained. Hidayat and Prapanna can both make a note of it for the future. Best wishes.

I would like to say that Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Saheb sang Jhinjhoti and Bilawal very well, but in swift tanas his voice glossed over the swaras,, and so could not define the notes properly. In contrast, if you listen to the thumris and bandishes of Ustad Majudin Khan, you will see he had the most perfect God-given voice which could execute all the swaras fully and swiftly. In my humble opinion, no other male singer has ever possessed the kind of voice that Ustad Majudin Khan had. I have 18 of his thumris, bandishes and cheezas on a CD Rom which i will upload for listeners if I can find it.

Mashkoor Ali Khan Saheb is truly the last of his kind, a true encyclopedia for the myriad names of musicians who are gone for ever, and whose names many of us have never heard before. What an utter tragedy that the age of recording missed most of them. Just imagine if we had had their recordings and videos!

অজশ্র ধন্যবাদ এই অতি মুল্যবান বার্তালাপ নির্ভর অনুষ্ঠানটি প্রযোজনার জন্য। অমর সেতার সাধক পণ্ডিত নিখিল বন্দোপাধ্যায়ের জীবন ও সঙ্গীত সাধনার খুঁটিনাটি বিবরণ সমৃদ্ধ এতো ভাল আলোচনা আগে কখনো শুনিনি। নিখিল বন্দোপাধ্যায় সম্বন্ধে কতো অজানা তথ্য, তাঁর স্বনির্মিত বাদন শৈলি, ও তার ব্যবহারিক প্রয়োগ, প্রথিতযশা সঙ্গীত শিল্পীদের কথায় উঠে এলো যা শব্দের বাঁধনে প্রকাশ করা যাবেনা। তবে আক্ষেপ এই যে, যা পেলাম তা বড়ো দেরিতে পেলাম। এখন জীবনের অপরাহ্ন। এতোদিন তাঁর সেতারবাদন শুনে শুনে নির্বোধের মতো তাকে কেবল অনুকরণ করার চেষ্টা করেগেছি। কলকাতায় জন্মাইনি তাই ইচ্ছাপূরণের মন্ত্র অজানাই রইলো। ভাবাবেশে কথাগুলো বেরিয়ে এলো। কিছু মনে করবেন না। এই অমর সেতারশিল্পী আমার প্রেরণা। এই অনুষ্ঠানে মানুষ এবং স্রষ্টা নিখিল বন্দোপাধ্যায়ের ব্যাপ্তি ও গভীরতার পরিচয় পেয়ে একটা কথাই মনে হলো, "Alas! If he were alive ......."

Thank you Pdt Darambir ji for the depth of your discussion which took us in a different direction where we achieved the knowledge of the inner meaning of music as a whole

I have been a lifelong devotee of Ustad Vilayat Khan sahib, and wrote a poem in Urdu eulogizing him. I had never met him personally, but sent the poem together with an audio cassette of my own recital of the long poem at Hidayat's address (was it in New jerseys?). I never heard from him, and was a bit disappointed too. It then so happened that he came to Manchester to perform and I met him at his hotel and spent an hour with him where he was staying the night, before his performance the following day. He recognized me as the person who had written the poem praising him. Hidayat might remember this or not. This was a few years before UVK passed away. When I do Riyaz, I often tune my Sitar to his and try to emulate some snatches from his video or audio recordings. He was a genius who inspired more than a whole generation of musicians. He continues to do so now, long after he has passed away.
