This is the worst and weakest story plot I’ve ever seen. While there is some good acting this entire story is stupid and insipid.

Ford Madox Ford's 1915 novel has a fragmented, mixed progression narrative that ideally lends itself to screen adaptation. It's splendid that this 1981 film is here available in whole and a treasure to happily discover ! Susan Fleetwood is excellent in a character, second only to Robin Ellis, in the end left standing in the domestic debris of the story. And as another commenter has suggested, her performance balances that of Jeremy Brett who gives a restrained, enigmatic treatment of our good soldier. Brett's is an economic performance that will surprise those familiar with his dazzling, virtuoso work as Sherlock Holmes. Robin Ellis and character linger in the mind a long time as we contemplate his decent and unseeing innocence with regard to the human drama as it is finally revealed to both him and us. His accent fortunately it is not 'too' flat.

Not to bore the uninterested but the "Albany" was built as a Replica from its inception. Meant to have the old look but easier to drive and maintain. The Duesenberg that the mechanic drives is also a Replica. I also met Robert Wagner and James Jill St. John and my company called him to wish him a happy birthday a few weeks later.

I've been watching this bygone years film 'The Merry Widow' numerous times yet never get tired of it truly. Jeremy Brett was so dashingly handsome. Same too for Mary Costa. Both stars were great indeed! Simply n truly an enjoyment to watch it over n again! Thank you UTube!👍

Just found this, thanks for posting. Rather jarring to hear Jeremy Brett talking about damaged heart valves causing her to have an enlarged heart, knowing that his damaged valves, aided by his smoking, would make his heart grow to almost twice normal size.

Its always special moments nostalgic maybe watching actions and dialogues of Mr Holmes (Holmes family as the name holders are successful on account of their hard work, dedication in general across the world) Holmes aka Jeremy Brett, English language is adorned further by him in his theaterical expressions like Shakespeare's work for English literature
