Great clear explanation on this. I love using the send trick, but I feel like it’s not well documented

Thanks for your kind comment! Actually just after I posted this, I noticed THIS video on the @bastlinstruments page which almost exactly replicates what I have here. But still I appreciate the feedback... ;-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4XVmomkpKaMZrc

sorry i'm a bit confused... what's the difference between this setup here and then having a setup where you run norns shield directly into the micrcosm and then run the microcosm into the bestie? does the setup you have here allow you to send the norns shield to the microcosm but also then have its original signal sent out the headphone output on the bestie? i would guess that most mixers that have a dedicated aux send and return then allows you to not only hear the original incoming signal, but then adjust the amount of that signal that gets sent to the aux send. and of course then you could choose to not hear the original signal, and only hear the signal sent to the aux which goes to the effect. but in the setup you have here i'm a bit confused as to that the advantage of this is? i guess if you had 4 inputs connected to the bestie you could then for example send 2 of them at the same time to the microcosm and the other 2 you could just send straight to the headphone output?

Hi. Let me give the specific use-case here: I have both the Norns and my Push 3 as sound sources that I'd like to route through the Microcosm, and then route the resulting sound back to Push 3 and on to Ableton Live.

I've also been trying to wrestle this chaos, its so fun... One thing I've been finding that helps me, if you start with 0 on all the locks randomisation, and keep randomising the sounds and patterns you get an idea of what that base palette of sound sounds like... Then increase the lock values and re-randomise the patterns. It gets me to a place between chaos and techy, chunky, moving sounds.

Hi Mike, thanks for the video, I too use VCV Rack for the generative features of modular, and have just started to appreciate the modular potential of Ableton. I really liked the example of the 3x3 clip and it’s generative possibilities, one question I have about the setup is, has each clip got a different sequence and if so how did you decide on there likeness or difference. Would appreciate your insights. Michael
@MikeKSmith_music2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. Each clip uses a different music phrase or sequence, but they are all the same length, in this case. The clips could be variants of an original, or you can use harmony ideas to come up with counter-melodies, or simple use Ableton's MIDI "Notes" tab in the clip to reverse or invert phrases, and then quantise these to a scale. Repetition here helps the listener to latch on to phrases before they change - too much randomness just sounds "odd" otherwise.

@@MikeKSmith_music thanks Mike, appreciate your reply - enjoyed your live performance. The thing that's nice about session view in Ableton is that it's workflow works well with systems music, the kind that is represented in your 9 clip example. Because I'm quite new to Ableton, any other techniques would be much appreciated. Some time ago I used LK in AUM on my iPad and cutup the happy birthday sequence into clips and ran it in a follow action matrix live at a birthday party. Session view plus its modular rack offers enormous potential.

Beautiful Mike ! I love during the first part, the association of the sustained but variable intensity of the strings with the soft Piano notes that fall like raindrops... And then the bass comes in with its warm sound. It's definitely a track that feels good !
