The democrats of the 1860s are today's Republicans. The democratic party started as the democratic- republican party. After that the parties were the democrats (conservatives) and the whigs (liberal). The whigs broke up and the democratic party split into two (north and south). Northern democrats were "liberal" leaning (and freed the slaves) and the southern democrats we're conservative. Back then it was different, the majority of the country was conservative. In 1868 the democratic party recombined and the republican party was formed. The democrats that fought in favor of slavery formed the Republican party in 1868. It wasn't until the 1930s that the parties saw the next big change. Up until the 20s, America was mostly Republican, and by the end of the 30s the majority was Democrat as Urban america... became a thing. And if you look at the voting map, huge population centers (urban/suburban America) is mostly Democrat, and rural areas are republican. So yeah, the democrats were upset when the slaves got freed. They were the only party at the time, other than the whigs, which no longer exist. Southern democrats fought for slavery, northern democrats fought against it. Republicans are what happened to Southern democrats when the party recombined.
