I received a great question, “…where does the Bible teach that God is composed of three parts: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?” First of all, let me apologize for the length of this response. This video and response aren’t intended to be a teaching on the Trinity as much as a vocabulary lesson (thus the series, “Church Words”). Perhaps I’ll do a teaching on the subject another time. I don’t believe that the Bible uses the word, “parts” to describe the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That was just my way of trying to explain it in a language we can all understand. To address the heart of the question however, I have quite a bit I can share on this, but I’ll try to keep it fairly short and just provide a few key scriptures that I believe will help. (All caps is mine to stress key words) Genesis 1:26 - ‘Let US make man in OUR image.’ Genesis 3:22 - ‘the man is become as one of US’ Deuteronomy 6:4 - ‘The Lord our God is ONE Lord.’ So there are a few references that point to one God with “parts.” (again, that’s my word) The Father: Isaiah 9:6 - ‘For unto us a child is born, unto us a SON is given... and His name shall be called… COUNSELLOR… The everlasting FATHER…’ (this one actually points to all three as the Holy Spirit functions as a counselor or “helper”) Romans 1:7 - ‘…God our Father…’ (God is referred to as our Father / the Father MANY times in scripture. God the Father is also referred to as Lord and Savior, and so is Jesus) The Son: John 1:1,14 - ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD... And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, AND DWELT AMONG US, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of THE ONLY BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER,) full of grace and truth.’ John 10:30 - ‘I and MY Father are one.’ John 14:28 - ‘…I go unto the Father: for MY Father is greater than I.’ 1 Corinthians 8:6 - ‘But to us there is but ONE GOD, THE FATHER, OF WHOM ARE ALL THINGS, and we in him; and ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, BY WHOM ARE ALL THINGS, and we by him.’ (Jesus refers to God the Father and God as His Father and states that He and the Father are one. He also refers to himself as I AM - God identifies Himself this way in Exodus) The Holy Spirit: John 4:24 - ‘God is a Spirit’ 2 Corinthians 3:17 - ‘Now THE LORD IS THAT SPIRIT: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.’ 1 Corinthians 2:12 - ‘Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but THE SPIRIT WHICH IS OF GOD…’ 1 Timothy 3:16 - ‘…God was manifest in the FLESH, justified in the SPIRIT…’ (Flesh being Jesus) (Notice in many of these there are cross-references, such as “of whom” and “by whom” or “the Lord is that Spirit and the Spirit of the Lord. So, when speaking to God, I find that people tend to address Him in the relationship they are most connected with. It’s not wrong to speak to Daddy, Jesus, or Holy Spirit, as they are one.) I hope this helps. Thanks for the question, and be blessed!
