Love all the people trying to convince themselves this is better than the official release. I'm of the opinion that his somewhat careless, maybe freeform singing is part of what makes his songs so good, but this version is just too much.

This was 25 years ago, they were both already 'old men' by then... and this song gets me right there, no matter what version, (although the Clapton ones are right up top). And they are still all out there playing shows, it's not got dark yet for them.

I love how he changed his presentation of this song as he aged. I've loved this song when I was very old, at 11, and am almost 69 now. I love how reflective the version from this era sounds. Plus in this version he includes one of my favorite verses of music or poetry ever anywhere - the one about liberty and equality. It reminds me of Robert Frost's comment that when he was most free he was least equal and when he was most equal he was least free.

I heard this masterpiece when it first came out almost sixty years ago. That was in the old days, before they painted the passports brown. The album cover shows the power of the cross, no accident there, Bob went straight at the crossroads.

Bad enough he squeaks out the words but he is ahead of the instrumentation which sounds like hell.

I don't know how he does but that first right hand 3 note at the start of the coda just screams. I don't know is it from recording or not but that feels incredibly tragic and lyrical.

Such a mood...missing one of the best verses though...for her I feel so afraid on her twenty second birthday she already is an old maid to her death is quite romantic she wears an iron vest her proffession is her religion her sin is her lifelessness and though her eyes are fixed on Noah's great rainbow she spends her time peaking into desolation row...
