I've been a machinist for over 20 years and I really admire the level of craftsmanship you have. I was never into watches but lately have gotten into old clocks, and watching videos about watches. It's amazing to me what was able to be made before we had all the fancy CNC equipment. One of these days I'll be able to afford a nice mechanical watch.

I've been drawn to/self teaching about jewelry making (and therefore watchmaking)for months now, and I'm finally getting close to purchasing some tools. Seeing all these (pieces)/sets has been fascinating. Finally realizing it was time to watch Your video today was such an ah-ha moment for me. Thanks so much for your awesome video!! Now I'm also wanting to learn watchmaking-i have always loved taking watch backs off and poking around. Thank you!

Discovered this channel only less than a week ago, (at time of writing).. Extremely informative and very educational.... As a designer (not watchmaker), I met Roger Smith and Kari Voutilainen on the same day at an event in 2016, I showed Roger Smith my design proposals for some well known watch brand... It was from he that I first realised the world needs watchmaker regardless of age, he said.... That was the catalyst for me to ensure that from at least the aesthetic angle, I was on the right track! This really is the hidden career of longevity in the world!

in microscopy, depth of field is terrible because of the high magnification. in the modern era, photographs are made with "image stacking", where many images are made with different focal distances, and they are stitched into a single image with a computer now it seems to me that technology has reached a point where we should be able to do image stacking in real time. desktop computers have far outpaced legendary supercomputers from the turn of the millennium. i feel like by now we should have optics that are mechanically oscillating over a range of depth while a computer outputs a binocular feed to something that's easier to look through than a microscope eyepiece when i look at workers in the microscopic real squinting through monacles, i wonder why large companies like swatch group aren't developing this

More DOF might appear to be a benefit at first, but when you actually get into the specifics of why DOF exists, limited DOF is actually a valuable tool. On my measuring microscope, I am able to measure height features of a part based on the very thin DOF produced by the elements of the microscope. If I focus on the top of a part and then move the z axis to focus on the next lower feature, I can measure the z value accurately to 0.0001 microns. Even in everyday life everything is not in focus at once, we use focal points and have two eyes in order to judge distances. If everything was in focus all the time, we would have a hard time finding edges and corners and would have a tough time processing all the information that is in focus instead of only what we need at that moment.

I know about the magnetic properties for analog output for a RPM but you just taught me the principles in gear set ratios for the secondary hobbsmeter (time recorder). Thanks for taking me on a journey into my past... Kimberly Bishop 47 years in my field and very few of us still around...

Denatured alcohol is generally ethanol with a small amount of methanol, both alcohols. Doesn’t the alcohols dissolve shellac that is typically used in older movements to hold the impulse jewel and pallet jewels in place? I use isopropanol for all items but those two. For the pallet fork and balance wheel I use hexane.

Hexane is ok if you are very cautious because it will damage your central nervous system from inhalation and if you get it on your skin. Shellac will only dissolve in denatured alcohol if you heat the alcohol. This episode is meant to show people that they can clean a watch movement at home with a jar, a brush, and denatured alcohol. All things that can be purchased at a local hardware store. You can also make this as complex and expensive as you like from there. If price is no factor I recommend you buy a $20,000 automatic cleaning machine from ELMA and use specialized cleaning and rinsing solutions from Europe.

@ thank you for your response. Many of the organic chemicals we use to clean have hazards associated with them. I use a fume extractor when I’m working with the hexane or IPA. It’s nice to have a solvent that isn’t miscible in water, such as hexane or heptane. I don’t have the skill/ability to reset an impulse or pallet jewel so I’m overly cautious with the alcohols. Plus my ultrasonic cleaner tends to warm to the solvent even though it’s not a unit with a heat setting. You do fantastic work and have a tremendous depth of knowledge/teaching style.

I love your caveat at the end - though not exactly a warning, but a challenge. The watch maker needs to show that they were deliberate in their design and implementation. The mental process needs to show through in some way. Thanks!

To work out dominant eye, just stretch out both your hands and make a small hole, between the thumbs and forefinger. Look at a distant object through the hole with both eyes, and then without moving, close each eye individually. The eye that shows the complete image through the circle is the dominant one. The non dominant eye shifts the image over a bit.

Is it ok to put the jar with denatured alcohol and parts halfway into an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for a few minutes?
@thewatchmakersworkshop

Yes, that is fine and sometime very necessary. Just remember that with heat in the ultrasonic, the alcohol will evaporate quicker than usual.

There was a time when companies did all sorts of strange things to increase the jewel count of a simple watch. The companies realized people would pay more for more jewels, so the companies started adding as many as they could. Now in the current market that isn't the case but it's fun to look around for vintage watches that have 50 extra jewels attached to the outside of the mainplate to act as a anti friction bumper for the oscillating weight if the weights axle is a bit worn out.

Helium escape valve can also be usefull for space walks, avoids building up pressure pushing out the cristal glass in the space vacuum. For diving its only usefull in commercial diving in diving- bells, maybe only 300people on this planet are certified for this very expensive sort of diving where they spend 2weeks to decompress in a pressure chamber.

I really wished you would have given us viewers a sample of the wages of a watchmaker .. thanks for great video.
@thewatchmakersworkshop
@thewatchmakersworkshop 25 күн бұрын
Wages all depend on your skill level, individual qualifications, and the specific role you are working in or applying to. The location of the work is also a large factor in pay because of the cost of living. If you are qualified to work on high complications like perpetual calendars and up from prestigious makers then you will command a much higher wage than a watchmaker fresh out of school with a CFC or equivalent watchmaking certificate. The range is huge. You will find people working in watchmaking roles with pay between $30,000 to $300,000, but maybe more realistically in the $80k to $100k range with a watchmaking certificate and some real life experience.

Denatured Alcohol or Isopropil Alcohol, which one is better? or Naphta?

Denatured alcohol for this application is what I choose. You could use 99% isopropyl if you really want to, but it will cost more and it will be harder to source locally.
