It's crazy how something so small can cause an explosion that big. (Small compared to the explosion it makes, ofcourse)

That's what the Philippines should invent to defend against our enemy, the Chinese long range missile, but its explosion is as powerful as an atomic bomb.

Actually this was a new year celebration, instead of fireworks they thought a nuclear bomb would steal the show.

The gun in this film is currently on display at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. The sign in front simply says "The Atomic Gun".

Yet, this wasn't the military's worst idea. There was the Davey Crockett, which was a shoulder launched battlefield nuclear device that didn't quite work out. Because if the wind blew the fallout back at the troops, well, you know.🙄

For a more realistic view of nuclear war, watch Threads or the War Game. No orchestras there, just a grim depiction of the attack and aftermath.

The weapons effects views (on buildings, vehicles, trees…) were totally unrelated to this specific test. Just added to this video for dramatization.

That was not your average artillery cannon. Must be over 10 inches caliber !! Probably a railway cannon. The Soviets had nuclear artillery shells for regular artillery cannons, 152mm I guess (6 inches) !!!

What were the vertical smoke trails to the right at the time of detonation? Smoke bombs to measure shockwave ?
@ed9121
@ed9121 18 күн бұрын
They were modified sounding rockets (typically used to gain scientific data from high altitudes) that left a smoke trail behind them at set distances from the detonation site. They were used to gather data on things such as the progression of the blast shock wave and other data.

@ed9121
@ed9121 18 күн бұрын
This is not an exhaustive list, but 2 ways were... Cameras were set anywhere up to over 3000 metres away and were using state of the art lenses to film the effects. Cameras were also mounted in steel and lead housing set on top if concrete towers for closer filming. I believe they also had heavy steel pipes embedded in the ground and used mirrors like a periscope to send images to the buried cameras. Take for example the cameras on the launch pad for Apollo rockets, they were set behind inches thick quartz blocks that protected them from the rocket motors and the exhaust.
