Try it for yourself. Have your friend go down in the camp while you stay on the ship and you'll see the mermaid spawn right away. But that orb is big worth it!

Also another really helpful is once you have dropped your anchor and stopped moving raise it back up so if you need to make a quick getaway or move into a defensive position all you need to do is drop the sails it’s really great on ships like the gallon which anchor can take really long to raise back up
