Oh yeah. I wish I was exposed to these songs when I was a teen. Yes had to do until I met Matthew.

It would be good to know what key he sings this in, as I find the tenor to high for me to sing. I love his vailed reference to Gurneys mental health issues, in singing outside what is clearly a psychiatric Hospital, a lovely touch and good performance I feel...

Dear friends and colleagues The COVID-19 pandemic has taken lives and caused suffering for millions around the world. We grieve those who have gone before their time, and offer support and comfort to those who need it. Here is our contribution: a COVID-19 crisis edition of Samuel Barber’s Dover Beach, with Rafael Todes and his family quartet. During lock-down, Raffy, Helena and children Isabella and Max, began to give daily concerts in the garden of their west London home, until, as you may have read, the authorities asked them to stop, fearing the audience may have grown too large. As the world comes slowly out of lockdown, musicians, it seems, will remain unable to play to audiences for many months to come. Orchestras and other anchor organisations are under threat of failure, and many have closed their doors until the end of the year or longer. Singers and opera houses are particularly hard hit. Will they survive?

I just heard The Tenors sing this and it occurred to me, fine job that they did, I’d prefer a baritone. Having heard this, that’s confirmed.

Oh, come on, the tenors are great! After all aren't lots of baritones just lazy tenors? ;)

An astonishing performance. By far, one of the top benchmarks of this piece. For me, it embodies the entire range of passion, hope and loss that the libretto demands. Very well done sir. An inspiration indeed.

This is a superb version of one of the greatest songs ever. I, too, am not altogether sure about the speed of it, but it is powerfully and beautifully sung. And the contrast in the speed of those wonderful descending lines - 'lone stands the house and the chimney stone is cold' (one of the most tragic lines in any song, I feel) makes a real emphasis as to which lines are the most important. A marvellous performance!

These are wonderful songs by Vaughan Williams, and any new recording of them, especially one so powerfully sung as this one, is welcome. But I maybe it's a bit hurried. The voice is beautiful though, and I'm sure this is the interpretation he wanted, and he gives an excellent account of the song from this emotional stand-point. Bravo.

Are you a lyric baritone or a dramatic baritone?
@davidjohnpike8 жыл бұрын
Well, definitely a baritone... :)
@deadwalke95888 жыл бұрын
David John Pike, baritone And a great one at that. It's kind of rare to see a full blooded Baritone singing Handel with an apparent ease of tone and flexibility, that most lower voiced males (besides Samuel Ramey) tend to restrict their voices to sound bigger or smaller. Here's a baritone finally with enough gusto to sing the heroic coloratura lines with a great sense of musicality and bravura. Please share more videos. You're the type of baritone that's needed to help this unfortunate era of Opera. Where were you when we needed you when Domingo started singing (and horribly at that,) the true Verdian baritone roles from 2012-2015?

Thank you for your kind words. In contrast, if you're interested in some Puccini, there's a bit of Tosca on my KZbin Channel as well (Scarpia).

And if it's romantic era you're after, there's plenty of Vaughan Williams, Butterworth (English song) and so on.

A magnificent set of songs, poignant and tragic, yet showing a real love of life. Housman's poetry continues to be timely and powerful today. It is too bad Butterworth never had the chance to write more.

Many thanks - glad you enjoyed it! This was filmed on the shores of Lake Ontario, in my hometown of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, last autumn when I was home for a few days. Home, no more home to me... We have recorded the entire cycle, and other songs by Vaughan Williams, Finzi and Quilter, on a CD entitled "Whither must I wander?" on Signum Classics (www.signumrecords.com/catalogue/december-2012-releases/whither-must-i-wander/sigcd314.html). This is fabulous. This is one of my two favorite recordings of this song that I have heard, the other one being the recording of Thomas Allen singing with the BBC Symphony on the last night of the proms. I love singing these, and I have sung them before, but alas I am a Tenor, and while RVW tends to write his Baritone stuff high it still doesn't sound quite right unless it is a true Baritone singing them. It is kind of like a viola playing a cello part. Thank you for this moving performance!
