Fabulous analysis. I actually wrote a post a while ago in a movie group detailing some of this but I love how you put it in actual technical film terminology. Another aspect to mention is the “world stops for someone in a romantic kiss” - the non diegetic music serves to take Lorraine and George out of the dance for a moment - like they only have thoughts for each other right then - the viewer is taken into their mindset, then returned to Marty’s POV when Earth Angel starts up again.

Also a kudos to MJF’s acting. Marty just obsessive staring at his parents at the start. His collapse when his timeline is crumbling. Then his pop up with the subtle look of relief/surprise/happiness. Just a perfect scene.

Thanks for a great analysis of how the music works so brilliantly to heighten this scene. My favorite aspect of the scene personally is the unexpected intrusion of the red-haired guy (Dixon). He originally had a slightly bigger part as another more minor bully of George (he's one of the guys kicking George when he has the "KICK ME" sign on), but it actually works *better* that they cut his part down, and we've barely seen him at all up to this point, so his presence is completely a surprise. But the main reason that moment resonates so well is that we need to see proof that George's one moment of courage in standing up to Biff wasn't some one-off that happened in a tense moment; we need to be shown that his confidence will remain and continue to grow from here. So when we see George just casually push down Dixon (who isn't nearly as imposing as Biff), it's a great visual and story moment.

I think another good example of this great technique being used is in "Maniac Cop" in the scene known as the "Maniac Cop Flashbacks". It starts with Maniac Cop lying down to rest at the dock, and he's lying in the darkness remembering when he was in prison. It starts with sort of a lullaby version of the Maniac Cop theme song. As the flashback scenes progress, various background notes and sounds are played throughout the scene to build tension and emphasize various action sequences, while all throughout this time, the soft lullaby song continues to play, which emphasizes that in reality Maniac Cop is just lying down resting and remembering. It actually really bothered me at first because the 2 songs don't seem to fit together at all and aren't even in the same key, but after some time I came to appreciate it because it helps emphasize how tormented the Maniac Cop is and how he can never really have peace. You all should check it out sometime. The scene I'm talking about it on KZbin.

the simpsons has actually has far less merch than a lot of other extremely popular properties like Shrek or Spongebob for example. this could be because obviously kids shows will have more merch; but its interesting that much younger properties already have more memorabilia than a older, wildly popular shows.

you may not see so much simpsons stuff around these days, but back in the 2000's and especially the 1990's (during the show's heyday) there was no shortage officially licensed simpsons products to be found. jakks pacific (who already make pretty good mario and sonic toys) are coming out with a new line of simpsons action figures, plushes and playsets, set for release this september 💛

I also like the detail of how the reason why if you think about it Marty suddenly can't play the guitar is because, it was his Dad who taught him how to play and since his father at that moment didn't kiss Lorraine he forgets all of the knowledge his father would have given him on how to do so.

Sounds like a violin at the end of the song to make it more romantic. Probably they used more orchestra instruments to enhance the song. Really brilliant.

2:40 I think it's important that they explain how the life he's from will cause problems for what he's doing. If you know the scene from Battlestar Galactica. When the military takes on the role of the police the people become the enemy of the state. This shows how your background affects the work you're doing. Especially because your mind is trained for certain things. This when it switches over to another, it's not tuned to what's expected in that role.

I’m almost certain that George is autistic, and the Tension music seems to be showing that he’s experiencing sensory overload. Especially with the whole disconnect that you were talking about. But then George realizes that with Lorraine, he can get through it, and so he goes to her.

what a surreal moment for a young high school teenager to play Earth Angel for his parents so they can kiss, fall in love and Marty is the fruit of their love. :) You have to love romance, imagination and Hollywood visual and musical effects! (sighing)

No when I was a child this song was used on me to convince me I'm an earth angel and I should join Dajjaal in which I declined. It's nice to start getting my memory back which they tried so hard to fry so I couldn't remember my childhood.

Thank you for your analysis! I actually analysed this exact scene almost 15 years ago for a school project and I always thought this was one the best comibinations of "on screen music" and the orchestra which in this case alan silvestri utilised to perfectly. The moment of "...the vision of you happiness.." and the immediate combination after of the two songs is so incredible!

I watched Stranger Things season 4 a few days ago and the ending to one of the episodes reminded me of this video. I think they do a similar thing with the mixing of a song and a theme during a climactic moment.

This was a very special scene and they do the song Earth Angel and the lyrics of that song are very touching for George and Lorraine because the lyrics are basically saying I will love you for all time and I fell for your loveliness I'm just a fool in Love with you because isn't that what we all are a fool and love In the scene where Marty stands up after getting his existence back and the splash drum comes into play and his guitar that scene and those two sounds along with Marvin Berry's voice or almost like the crescendo of this entire scene and somehow you just knew that everything was going to be ok. When George shoves that dude to the ground ,that in a way was even more powerful than him slugging Biff, with that particular scene and then the lead up to the kiss and then the kiss has to be the most powerful romantic scene in movie history and then the musical crescendo as I mentioned before right after that it's almost like the gold at the end of the rainbow Earth Angel was a very appropriate song for the situation

Once Marty saved his father from being hit with the car, they were on a different timeline. Anything could have happened. There’s no guarantee that George and Lorraine had three kids, or even got married. Would have been interesting if he kissed her and only two kids reappeared and not Marty. He just faded away completely.
@davidnassau232 жыл бұрын
This never made sense to me. George has billions of sperm cells. Almost no chance of the same one meeting the same egg, so it won’t be Marty that’s born but some other kid. Marty will still be erased from the timeline no matter what.
