Many years ago I worked in a research institute. A friend was working on cabbage white butterflies. One day he entered the lab and all the caterpillars had left the tanks, climbed the wall to the ceiling and died. My friend ran a sample through the electron microscope and found they had a new virus. He asked the head of department what he should do with the dead caterpillars which had been dropped into a beaker. The reply was, "you can throw that bloody mess out the window". He did. The cabbage white population fell quickly and dramatically

As a plantaholic myself, i very much enjoyed this "walk" through your gardens. Liking the brazen application of balanced imbalance. Good to see Cimicifuga/Actaea purpurea; one of my favourite plants as one can easily count a dozen or so different critters at the same time on its flowers on a sunny day. Brave to be using Succisa pratensis, as it seeds around vEry freely 😅 Also liked seeing the Gillenia in droves, in contrast to the smaller clumps in my clients' "little" gardens. 🙏🏽 🌳🕊💚

Thank you for taking about this it's very important. We need to stop the decline of the insect population. The verge outside wasn't mowed for 3 months wild flowers and insect came back. My front garden was covered in ladybird juniors Amazing, then the council mowed it down 😢

This popped up after a documentary about Christopher Lloyd and followed on perfectly. I am sure Christopher Lloyd would love the evolution of the garden since 2006.

Will solomons seal survive if you transplant it in spring or summer when the leaves are fully out, before it flowers? I assume in rich humousy soil and full sun is better. Apparently its a pretty adaptable plant with a "prepper" mentality. I bought some rhizomes and want to establish them.

Interesting that Alastair does not mention deer species in the list of large grazing herbivores. Why is this? Deer are not as dangerous to human ramblers and walkers as cattle and pigs. They produce lots of meat for very little human input - in fact the UK has to spend lots of cash culling them - can't we just get rid of intensively farmed livestock and eat venison instead?

I've been watching more and more Beth Chatto inspired planting since last year's drought conditions turned everywhere in Oxfordshire around us into brown and dried up areas. With climate change Peter's ideas will be used to replace lawns with this amazing meadow planting. I love that there is always more learning to do when it comes to plants and gardens.

Great Presentation! Appreciated!! We have a single Bearded Iris in the backyard of a property we purchased six years ago. Not knowing any better (until now), I left it to its own destiny. It has grown to a diameter of five feet; and as you can guess, it has many generations of rhysomes (and only has a single bloom each year). Following your instructions, I had very good results in removing it from the soil, separating it, trimming the sections and parsing out the healthy ones. Couple of questions: Since I didn't expect so many divisions, I have far more new sections to plant than I alotted for and will be needing the time to prepare some new planting areas. (There must be at least fifty new plants!) It will take me a bit longer to prepare beds for them, and in anticipation for that delay, after cleaning the rhysomes and roots, I put them into two buckets of water, submerging the rhysomes and roots and keep the leavy bits above water. Is that what I should be doing; and if so, how long will they withstand that situation? As I cleaned the rhysomes, I noticed the largest (oldest) ones each had a series of pinholes in them, interesting enough those holes were in near perfect matrices. I've tossed those as I'm assuming they aren't in the best of health. Is my assumption correct? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!!

@larkin78

I think he meant that the plant stems that grow from the ground naturally arch, so you don't want to make prunes mid arch or along the top of an arch in a way that will force growth that distorts those shapes in general.
