The charm and grace of Hornby Dublo, I love the Gresley coaches, even the mirror effect window can be surprisingly realistic when caught at the right angle.

My 80054 complete with 3 goods and a circle of track was my Christmas present in the early 50s. My 80054 is less than 3 ft from me as I type, but in a display cabinet. Not sure if it could manage 8 coaches as per this video. Plenty of track in the loft, hmmmm shall I give it a try?? Thanks for the memories. Not much 3 rail about these days.

At least with 3 rail on the carpet there is some protection against fluff finding its way into the mechanism! Nice video.

I remember one year in the late 50s my dad bought me a hornby goods train set and my grandad and grandma bought me a hornby passenger train set, that set was the brittania class 7000 engine with pullman cars,

Great stuff! And from a time when a Hornby train set gave you an authentic loco hauling authentic carriages and wagons that you would see on the real railway! Unlike the tat they produce now with fictitious 0-4-0s in their umpteenth different made-up livery pulling unrealistic generic rolling stock.
@crewelocoman5b161Ай бұрын
Not for any of us I guess, but the counter argument is that small children need to start somewhere and cheap and cheerful always sells very well. I packed a Hornby trainset for a ten year old this Christmas and it contained Flying Scotsman with four Gresley teak coaches, a layout map, an oval of track plus two add-on track packs and points, transformer/power controller, a couple of buffer stops and a detail pack for the loco. Hornby Dublo offered a starter train set with a little 0-4-0 tank with red wheels and cheap and cheerful rolling stock in 1963. Alas, it came too late in the day to save them as Tri-ang and Playcraft had stolen the march on them.

Gorgeous. 7013 is my favourite even if she's the least powerful of all my 3 rail express locomotives (46245 converted to 3-rail with a Marklin skate is an absolute MONSTER). Mind you 7013 is sulking a bit at the moment since I converted Lima class 52 "Western Gladiator" to 3-rail 😢. Love them both ! But there's something very special about Hornby Dublo...❤ My theory is that it's because when they were released, the prototypes were still operational (Or in the case of the 4MT 2-6-4T still being delivered!). Dublo captured the spirit of that and for me that's what makes them special !

I had Hornby Dublo railway when I was a young boy in the late 1950s / early 60s. Started off with a 2-6-4T and some coaches. We kind of knew that the 3-rail tinplate track was hopelessly unrealistic but accepted it and enjoyed running the trains. There was a hardware shop known as Batesons in the nearby town of Rochdale. It was an Aladin's cave well stocked with Hornby Dublo and the staff all wore those long, iconic brown overalls. I would get the bus into town and spend my carefully saved pocket money there. Looking back the remarkable thing is that I was able to undertake the 2/3 miles bus journey on my own. There was never any suggestion of a threat to my safety.

I got the "dutchess of montrose" round about 1962
@dereklund2321Ай бұрын
@@MartinCollier-w5v Ah yes, I got 46232 too. Then it was, I think, the N2 number 69567 - good performer on tight curves. Finally number 34005, Barnstaple with a complement of Pullman coaches. Somewhere along the line I began converting to 2 rail and disposed of the old 3 rail track; I wish I'd kept it now.

Interesting to see there was an oddball running round the Hornby Dublo 3 rail layout in the form of a streamlined A4 painted in grey, maybe a pre war leftover that have been re-livery by Hornby?
@clivebennettHornbyDubloАй бұрын
the film is 1952....... it is the 2018 Dublo layout at the Warley Show I edited in which has made you think pre war, there are younger than 1952 Dublo engines running.......if you look around the layout you will spot these

Minories, the plan in the Peco 60 plans for small railways booklet by Cyril Freezer. I pawed over it for hours as a young teen in the sixties, never got round to attempting it, was that realy all those years ago. Now I have the spare time, the money even the space but these old hands and eyes aren't up to it! Time passes by so quickly, make the most of it.

That's not a very safe place to fit a knife rack ( on the edge of a kitchen worktop where a young child could've easily got to it ). My Dad who grew up in the 50's had a Hornby Dublo Railway Set.
