Excellent video! I will use this on my current Lamy pens which I love. However, they are no longer my go to pen because of this issue. My current favorite are the TWSBIs which I find are easy to maintain and they write pretty much every time even after sitting for weeks.

Does Pelikan Brilliant Black ink dry quickly in the Pilot Elite? Is it easy to clean? Does the ink have a strong smell?

There's 2 type of shop that I found usually have this type of buffing stick. 1st is the nail manicure items shop. 2nd is the hobby modelling shop, like gundam, model train, etc.

This is a very nice, handy, simple tutorial on how to do this necessary inner tine smoothing/polishing. I wonder if it's maybe easier to do this inner tine smoothing with the nib removed from the feed and of course out of the section (if friction fit) or out of the plastic screw-in unit that holds nib and feed together. What do you think?
@jacobonfountainpen
@jacobonfountainpen Ай бұрын
Yes you can certainly do it that way too. Just that you can't immediately test it with ink after each stroke.

You can also put the empty cap for 2-3 minutes in hot water and let it dry and cool down. This shrinks the elastomeric cap lining back to its original dimensions. Do not put the pen back while it is still warm. It should cool down while it is empty. By hot I mean around 70-80 degrees C. Do not boil the cap. It is my personal method. I do not take any responsibility about the consequences.

In this video, it already shows how to disassemble the whole cap, including removing the inner cap and the metal thingy. So you should be able to clean them then.

This repair is not without risk- be careful to have your 'pushing tool' exactly centered to only push on the finial- otherwise the inner cap can tear. (don't ask me how I know!) I used a 3mm hex key as a tool. I used 2 wraps of electrical tape around the inner cap to improve the snap. The pen is back together with improved snap, but I'm guessing the inner cap will fall out at some point as there is nothing holding it in but friction at this point. I might have to glue it in place if it falls out. does anyone offer replacement inner cap components? Lamy doesn't appear to, and I couldn't find anything on Amazon or Aliexpress.
@jacobonfountainpen

yep i guess having a softer rounder 'pushing tool' would help, like a wooder stick or something of the right size and shape.

Do you think this applies with Sailor 21 pocket pens of the same era?
@jacobonfountainpen
@jacobonfountainpen 3 ай бұрын
Yes they do. In fact I've one sailor pocket pen of the 70s too, it's 18k nib. The construction is more similar to the pilot elite vintage. So the disassembly method of the pilot's one can roughly apply the same to the sailor. Haven't got time around to make the video for the sailor pocket pen yet.

Is it possible to fix the tipping being bent inward or outward? When the tipping looks just like a ladybug with open wings, I mean.
@jacobonfountainpen
@jacobonfountainpen 3 ай бұрын
What you describing I think it's referred to a 'grand canyon' or 'reverse grand canyon' problem. I've never fixed anything like that so far. But I think it's possible. You need to grab the tiny space on the tine and twist them, finger is just not going to be able to grab that small area. So I would imagine a special shaped plier or something will be needed.

You cannot imagine how much you've helped me rest, more than anything. As someone with high ocd I couldn't get it out of my head that, after smoothing, there was still a minor scratch from certain positions. I've destroyed nibs trying to get rid of that and no other video than yours mentions it. I did it 10 mins ago to a Conklin nib that I smoothed earlier this day and it turned it into a great writer. I've spent approx 4 hours on this nib today and your video helped me fix it in 2 mins, because it was the inner tines that was messing with everything. God bless you!
