Looking a gay/lesbian friend to teach me sign language for the community...

As an Interpreting student currently taking "Advanced Deaf Culture," I appreciate you taking this stance and giving that education opportunity back to a Deaf person. We've been learning about Cultural Appropriation and I agree with your take here. A person who's first language is ASL is the most qualified to teach ASL. Thank you for recognizing your appropriation, stepping up, speaking out and facing some of these negative comments with grace. If one hasn't socialized with the Deaf community, they just won't understand why it's important to keep those opportunities for the Deaf. I encourage all of you who are confused or don't agree to do some research or watch the video she mentions to understand Appropriation and what the means to the Deaf community. From the Deaf people I know, they are often victims of appropriation or discrimination and deserve respect in their feelings. Thank you again, for speaking out.

I lost most of my hearing this year all these labels are fine but I prefer for myself either hearing impaired or hard of hearing I know some don't like the term hearing impaired but years ago due to a guy with road rage I in an accident and it left me permanently crippled with my leg so I classify cripple a individual play let it all hang out and I am proud I don't and I don't bother trying to hide my flaws what's the point but I am going completely deaf and but for now people can talk to me they just have to speak up but when the time comes and I can't hear anything I will gladly say I am deaf. But that's just my personal feelings about me I have hearing aids but due to excessive ear wax sometimes I have to give them a break and I live in an urban area I asked others please do not assume that I can hear you clearly get my attention poke me touch me look me in the face when you're talking to me and speak up I'm not ignoring you.

Super appreciate all this information! There are a couple of options here I've never thought of. But could you be more specific about being a Linguist? I would love to work as a linguist with ASL, but I know for a fact that 'linguist' jobs aren't just sitting on Indeed/Handshake. Do you know of specific organizations hiring linguists, or organizations hiring linguists in the interest of ASL? What might a linguist do working with ASL? I'd love to hear more about that whole avenue!

I learned incorrect English grammar first and was never able to understand the correct grammar later so I understand why you say it's best to learn ASL first. It's very hard trying to unlearn incorrect grammar.

I'm curious how name signs are for deaf children of hearing families. like even if the child doesn't receieve a sign name, would she be likely to make signs for her family?

Thank you for speaking about this topic, as I think it is an important unspoken rule of Deaf culture. I am hearing and am working towards being a general education elementary teach. I have my associates in ASL and love the language and Deaf community. I have recently been working on my senior capstone thesis and wanted to look into the effects of using sign in an elementary classroom, ideally without explicitly teaching sign since I am hearing. My current idea is to SimCom while I teach, but that brings up the difficulties in signing ASL grammar and syntax while speaking English. Do you have any recommendations? I would really like to hear what you think about this. Thanks!

I’m learning asl and can carry basic conversation But my only problem is mouth morphine I have limitation in moving my lips 👄 when speaking…… question. Is it really necessary to do all mouth morphine when signing ??? 🤔

can we talk for a minute about how its not only the deaf community that uses sign language... as a matter of fact the autistic community does as well in many cases for example when they cannot have their aac with them or are too overstimulated to use it.... teaching, i agree deaf people should be given 1st opportunity to teach, however as an autistic person myself, and an auditory learner but with vocal words that dont work right much of the time i had to learn to sign, in order to communicate in my own life and its complicated enough as my signing is modified as well so, but from a learners perspective as an auditory learning having someone use their voice to explain the signs helped me alot. i dont think i could have learned without that and honestly, then id be really stuck if my aac ever didn't work for whatever reason. i am a multi modal communicator, high tech aac, low tech aac, sign, and verbal vocal speech and pen and paper i use them all... my mom was a teacher for many many years with spec ed, juvie kids, system kids, etc and she always said and even told my schoool teachers, if someone cant learn the way you teach, maybe you need to teach the way they learn.

I know this is a five year old video. None of these brands are available in Australia: Chao, Daiya, Follow you heart, Lisanatti, Miyokos, So Delicious, Teese, Tofutti, Violife What we have is 2 brands and one supermarket brand ("Made with Plants"): Of those, there are a total of 7 combinations of brands and flavours: Sheese, Biocheese Parmesan / Cheddar / Pizza / Marinated Feta / Creamy Original and finally "Made with Plants" They work out at about $45-68 per kg. Vegan cheese in Australia is terrible, lacking variety and expensive. Sheese is probably the least worst. It hadn't been in stock for months.

The ONLY times I could see a hearing person teaching ASL (and it is not up to me, so just my $0.02) are 1. If they KNOW ASL (not just ABCDE) and are teaching their very young child, like baby, then get them a Deaf teacher when the baby becomes school age and it's affordable, and 2. If they are a TOD for special needs. Special needs is very complex and sometimes the student needs someone who can hear them. That in itself is accessibility. However, at no point should people think a Deaf person can't teach someone with special needs. I just mean it all depends on the support needs of the student.

I see what you did there for the one handed sign for "talking about" where the open hand taps to the mouth and then you brought the finger to go around the other hand that wasnt there right? Just you did it one handed and without the other hand
@torontotom31685 ай бұрын
There is another sign for that where it's the open hand taping the mouth and the shape moves to a t Handshape for "talk about" and it is one handed, so awesome to see you do the two handed version as one hand thank you! Now I know that!

I've been discriminated against by every person I've been employed with. And rather than help me they didn't really take my needs seriously. Nor listen when I tried to explain my needs. They promised reasonable adjustments. But Time rolled up a least a year, and they were never put in place. It's disgusting treatment, but hey if you're disabled it's treatment that is somehow deemed ok, if you are from the abled bodied world. How we change things?

They're completely removing swear words from captions as well. The fact they aren't doing anything about this is disgusting.

STOP TEACHING SIGN LANGUAGE. CUED SPEECH IS THE BEST CHOICE INSTEAD!
I’m HOH and wear dual hearing aids and I sign. There is a monthly meeting at a local restaurant / coffee shop for the Deaf community. I have attended and have had some good conversations. However, when someone arrives that that the person I’m visiting with knows, they will move on and begin visiting with the new person and drop me. I was not born deaf but hard of hearing. I don’t come from a family of deaf. If you’re born deaf and come from a deaf family, it’s more highly thought of in the Deaf community. Sometimes it’s difficult since those like me don’t truly fit into hearing or deaf worlds. Ignored by some, tolerated by others.
