If you are looking for something easier than the 110 blocks. Consider a pair of QKBOX41A 19in rack mount brackets Part: A0352331 These are for mounting two BIX mounts QMBIX10A (250 pair) or QMBIX12E (300 pair) to a standard 19in rack. The Northern Telecom (now Belden) BIX strips provide easy access to bothe the feed crossconnect sides, as apposed to having to remove a full C4 or C5 block on a 110 frame to access the feed side.
@joesvax
@joesvax 19 күн бұрын
I did consider BIX, mostly because they fit in a 19" rack better, but I ended up going with 110 because of time and cost constraints (which is to say that I already owned them and they were already half-cabled). Still, I might look into BIX for next year, particularly if the cross connect field has to grow again.

I had multiple people tell me during and after the show, "I can't believe how committed they are to the bit!", but of course it's more than a "bit" given the months of engineering and preparation that went into this. The dedication was inspiring.

I like to think of our exhibit as more than just our exhibitS it also serves to support and enhance the other exhibits. That does put us in the position of being show infrastructure, and that comes with a certain level of responsibility. I'm really happy with how the show itself went this year and I'd go so far as to say it's been the best year so far with respect to the telephone network. The network setup went faster and smoother than ever before and we even offered a few new services than we have in previous years. My hope is to continue to improve our processes to not only support growth in the show but also do what we can to get a little time back to explore the show or work on new elements of the telecom exhibit.

Coincidentally, I co-op'ed as an outside plant engineer with BellSouth in Tuscaloosa while I was in school there (in electrical engineering). I haven't checked lately, but last I heard, AT&T was using Lucent 5ESS switches in all three Tuscaloosa central offices (Northport, Druid Hills, and Tuscaloosa Main & Toll). They replaced the switch in the Main & Toll office after I graduated (the former clicky beast in that CO was an AT&T [Lucent] of some variety), and for some reason I never had a reason to visit the Northport CO, but I've seen the 5ESS in the Druid Hills office. :)

You know, as you were making that call and saying the phone number out loud, "three...four...eight...", I was thinking, "That's a weird coincidence. That's the same exchange number used by my undergraduate university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama" (I obviously skipped a lot of the video). 😆

This is actually an SL-100 PBX, not a DMS-100
@joesvax
@joesvax 2 ай бұрын
Correct. When this switch was originally installed, it was classed as a DMS-100/200 and the SL-100 did not yet exist as I understand it (1984). During later upgrades, the software was reconfigured to be an SL-100. The SL-100 PBX is in the DMS-100 family of telephone switches and shares its base hardware and software with the other switches in the same family. I figured viewers on youtube would be more likely to recognize the DMS name and it is close enough to correct for the purposes of this video. I do show a few cabinet configurations that would not be present in a true DMS such as the MCAM and an IPE cabinet. The optional EMI shielding doors seen on one of the 7ft frames are also intended for PBX installations as well.

HI, I have a question to ask you. I have an IBM6182 plotter (HP7550A) and I have connected the RS-232-C cable to the Terminal port (DB25) of the plotter to the COM 5 card of the PC (DB9). I would like to print the *.hpgl files directly via the serial port with the command: "copy nome.hpgl >com5" because I don't have the drivers for Windows 11. I tried but the plotter goes into error and freezes (15: ERROR IN I/O TRANSMISSION). What should I do to make the PC communicate with the Plotter? How do you set the plotter? Can you help me solve and recommend programs, whether for Windows or Linux? Thank you Federico

Glad you got that fixed and that it was trivial. I am having less luck with my CRT monitor. The power LED actually shuts off the moment a signal isn't detected, and the power build fades away, even though there's still technically some power running through the supply. By design, the monitor is supposed to remain idle with its power LED on, until a source is detected. Unfortunately, the monitor only intermittently detects a source. When it does finally detect it, it powers on fine and displays an image. Finally at this point, its power on/off becomes consistent as far as I know. It's as if the monitor is dodgy when cold but fine to go once it's warm. After left for a while, it's back to square one and I have to do specific power-on procedures in order to get the monitor to hang on and display an image.I am still not sure what the issue is. All the caps I inspected looked physically fine. There is a buzzing coming from somewhere in the monitor, but that could just be some loose coils. I hope it's not a failure with the main board or video signal board.

I must be getting old. I worked on these at BNR in our captive offices, mid 80s, and wrote some of the LCM and other maintenance software other peripherals, i.e. the double dashes that report card failure on 1/2 the replaceable unit. I can't remember much (PROTEL or other), I went on to other work at Nortel and anyway, so long ago ... amazing to see this set up in a garage, I wouldn't know how to do any of this anymore (I do remember loading large tapes of test software) in lab shifts that were sometimes only available at midnight ... blast from the past. Thankyou.

The network module slots are based upon 32-bit PCI bus running at only up to 25MHz due to the less ideal transmission line characteristics of the extra connectorization. The next generation jumped to PCIe. It’s quite possible that I might have EEPROM data as I have most every module and card.
@joesvax
@joesvax 7 ай бұрын
I actually ended up with a working set of cards and tried to copy the EEPROM data from the working to the non-working, but I think the next thing I ran into was that the CPLD isn't flashed with the right code. It's a project I might pick back up one day, but not really a priority. The cards in question are VIC2-2BRI-NT/TE.

I believe that you bought the AMP CHAMP butterfly tool rather than Amphenol’s. They are plug compatible, but have entirely different insulation displacement mechanisms. I bought one of these new in the mid 80’s to work on 1A2 key systems that were largely abandoned after divestiture. I still have it in it’s hard plastic shell case along somewhere in storage. There are other sizes such as 24-pin for HP/IB, 36-pin for Centronics parallel printers, and 64-pin used on some channel banks to bring out all 28 T-1 TX or RX pairs of a T-3.

You can build an adapter cable. 8P8C plugs (commonly referred to as RJ45) support up to 4 pairs, so depending on the wiring scheme, it could take between 6 and 25 plugs to break out every pair of a 25 pair connector to 8P8C plugs.

I was one of the last "new hires (2006)" during the CVoIP transition from TDM and the last soldiers standing were older and extremely intelligent. I learned so much but never saw what they had to know. This is what they did in the back of 18 wheelers when hurricanes hit and they drove "ER trucks" to site. Loading specific site configs onto these things, powering them up to provide 911 and emergency call services to devastated areas. Wow.
