I met Thumbs at an after hour club in Silver Springs Maryland in the late seventies. He was the guitarist for Roger Miller's band. Roger was also there. I played Chilli Con Carne written by Kenny Burrell. After I played, Thumbs played. I couldn't believe what I saw and heard! What an extremely talented and gifted musician, he could play it all.

Time moves and opinions and judgements might change, but, Thumbs was a sensational, original, unique performer with surprising taste, touch, technique, and so, is in a high place, growing always, as a guitarist to stand, teach, admire.

At first I though "What a shame that the greatness of Thumbs Carlile is relegated to a mall". Then I realized that back in the 80s, Mall gigs were probably a pretty big deal.

here's some lore I created as I go with what I type: "You've awoken in a mysterious room with a light bulb dimly lighting your surroundings, the air feels slightly thicker while it feels somehow cold. a small breeze is heard despite there being none, in front of you are pots presumably made out of clay." "They sing without a mouth, a lost old song that was forgotten, please do not touch the pots as something will happen to you." "please do not touch them" "you are alone but it doesn't feel as if you were, the atmosphere is odd, ominous. It is unknown on why they sing, but it this theorized on the pots are filled with the lost souls of those who were once lost in this area, those who's sanity melted and those who listened to the song." "A place... of the found."

I worked with Thumbs back in the early 80’s at Calamity’s in Redondo Beach. Kathy came out for a visit and sat in with the band called the Shutouts, The audience was blown away. I live in Decatur GA now and see Thumbs wife Virginia and Kathy from time to time.

I was there that night. It was one of only two times I ever saw Thumbs. Just brilliant. Very unique, unbelievable facility. And I was friends with Kathy then. I haven't seen her in years. I understand she's had health problems. And of course, Thumbs passed away a couple of months or so after this video was shot.

Kathy practically lived at my house, about the time of her break out with Johnny and Shuggie Otis at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 81. Sometimes we would go out Slumin at open mikes in Monterey, take turns sitting in w/ Johnny Rocker at The Electric Boat. Always Had a blast.

great singer, real soul. Janis style and phrasing, but nothing wrong with that as Janis was a big BIG inspiration to many women back then, just as people copied Jazz singers in the 40s and 50s and singers today as well.... Thumbs is a legend. Great film...
