Have a plain white room with tiles, put in a lot of wooden objects and then put in the mimics. No wooden personal items are allowed inside. The mimics will mimic the wooden objects, the real wooden items will be removed over time but the mimics will want to fit in with the other mimics that look like wooden items so the mimics will still be wood while there is no other wood inside exept for the mimics. The tiles are counted every 12 hours, if a mimic chooses to mimic a tile instead of a wooden object they are instantly killed, the mimics will learn to not mimic tiles in order to live, the tile mimics are turned into food. When the mimics eventually start getting used to it and learn to not turn into tiles, the most accurate mimic is killed and the least skilled mimic lives the longest, the mimics get worse at being mimics over time so security breaches become less and less of a problem as the mimics get worse at there job.

im just picturing a large pit hole that looks like a dump but with steel walls and a few guards around it. And in order to get a mimic you basically fish them out of the dump using spoiled meat or something as bait, you then meassure it and throw it back if it is too small (since mimics grow in size with age)
@ampersandboxttrpg6 ай бұрын
Do you think the mimics would learn to work together to form a massive ladder to get out of the hole?
@Fastdragonstar6 ай бұрын
@@ampersandboxttrpg hmm... they only have an int of 5 on avarage and no ambition beyond eating and surviving so rather than a ladder i think they would at most just try to form piles leaning against the walls or towards wherever the food comes from in a similar manner to the zombies in world war Z just much slower and out of random items or trinkets, but they would only actively try to leave if they got to close to the edge or if they got hungry/agitated enough (or large enough to leave by themselves). Hence why you would need a few guards to push them back in once they get to close to the edge or in order to deal with any escapees. If you happened to have an extremely clever mimic in the pit however then it might transform itself into a small catapult and launch smaller mimics all over the place in order lessen the competition for food (or create chaos in order to escape)

Get 2-4 intelligent mimics that can speak, bribe with their favourite things (food, treasure, etc.) and magically inslave them to those that work on said farm. Their objective is to keep the violent and less intelligent mimics inline, rewarding the intelligent mimics when the behave and do their job correctly, and punishing them when they fail, all while instilling the mentality of you or them. Pitted recesses with smoothed walls and plenty of items thrown into the pit for the mimics to pick from. When it comes time for feeding they throw the food over the pit like bird feed and the mimics eat the slop from the ground and off the other non mimic objects. Furthermore you have spells that are made to hold for multiple hours which you can use as a cap to make sure that they cannot get out. Magic types actually seem perfectly suited to contain, raise and slaughter mimics. You don't even have to worry about damaged meat increasing its quality through the use of certain spells.

I just recently played a zealot barbarian during a metal themed campaign. My character started as a goofy "fuck you i do what i want" kind of character you see in bands all the time, dedicated to like being dark and ruthless. Think like Ozzy Osbourne or Johnny Silverhand. As the story progressed, my barbarian started to become dedicated to our worlds goddess of death. In the world lore she took on a similar role to like Charon from greek mythology, and he transformed from a more goofy i do what i want, to a true apostle of death focused on rooting out those who would oppose the natural cycle of life and death, and work against my diety. I think its okay for a character to have some rather strong changes in motivation through out a campaign as they go through it. It only makes sense that on an adventure you learn and you change who you are and what you believe based on the things you've been through. I think for the barbarian class especially (big and dumb) starting out naive and strong headed before learning your place feels especially fitting to me.

If we're looking at rules as written, the DM guide allows for situational modification of the roll in the form of advantage or adjusted DCs. In 5e, this is broken down in terms of how difficult something is (DC change) or if previous actions influence the current roll (advantage) (DMG, p238). Personally, as a DM, I'm fond of the 3.5 method of DC adjusting because it provides greater granularity in its example solutions to account for NPC attitude, and situation (PHB 1 v3.5, Chapter 4). Ultimately, it's about rewarding creativity while keeping it just challenging enough to be fun.
@ampersandboxttrpg7 ай бұрын
some of us are fans, and we forget where we say this, of Skill Check DCs going up for social situations when players fail. originally the DC is 15 to persuade, but each failure raises the DC +2 or +3 until the NPC just tells us to stop.

GMing needs to be fast and loose. The first thing said in any rulebook is essentially the rules are guidelines and the GM has final say. We've settled on a system of 'sell it to me' which basically means, make your case. If I feel it's plausible enough, I let you try it with the modifications as requested, or we meet in the middle.

@@ampersandboxttrpg it would be cool as like a legendary reaction or some such
@RomiKazoom7 ай бұрын
Dm here - I wouldn't suggest doing this at all if a full turn os in question. What I do is I give the BBEG an extra strong legendary action. usually when a BBEG is bloodied if you designed an encounter correctly that would mean that you PC's are at about half hp and resources or below. At a high enough level (let's say 5 and above) a full turn from my BBEG in the same round could wipe them considering they might have used their reactions before they even get an opportunity to get bloodied and have their turn. Combine this with mages being squishy and having concentration on things like haste on the more beefy characters a full turn, in my opinion, is a recipe for disaster. Also lets say you have a party of 6 and 3 get bloody at the same time from an aoe. They could swipe the board. Lastly and i think the most important one - there are subclasses where "the more I get fucked up the more I can do" is a major part of their whole thing. And I feel like giving this bloodied rule for every pc and therefore, to keep things balanced, every enemy npc (bc everything they have you should have as well) takes away from the flavour of those subclasses. They have this mechanism for a reason.
@ampersandboxttrpg7 ай бұрын
Our players shot down the idea pretty quick since 2 out of the 3 are DMs and although they would love to get an extra action when they are near death, they don't want the NPCs to have one. So for fairness right now we are shelving the idea. we love your insight on the subject Maybe *Cough Josh* should take a read. lol.
@inquisitorthornside3p4947 ай бұрын
Hey people remeber. PCs, Monsters, NPC, DM,. Don't play by the same rules. 5e was not designed with "whatever they can do you can too and vice versa". Trying to implement that won't work.
@RomiKazoom7 ай бұрын
@@inquisitorthornside3p494 I agree I think I phrased it incorrectly (I'm ESL). I work on a "whatever is in my player's toolbox is in my toolbox" kind of mentality and not every single enemy/NPC. However I do think that a mechanic like that would still be ill advised if only on the PC's side, and even if it's on both. I like to give legendary actions to my major big encounter enemies and not give something like that to my players bc in 5e the PCs are already overpowered. That way I have more control (if the encounter is too easy I can use it and if it's too hard I can just not mention it at all). I do think that the major reason I won't be in favour of it would still be the last one, I think it takes away from the flavour of those subclasses, and if they wanted that mechanic badly enough they would have taken it.

@inquisitorthornside3p4947 ай бұрын
it gives more advantages to NPCs.As they usually have more action economy. It will couse players to prioritise Burst DPS to avoid that bloodied NPC having a turn. And it can be abused by healing. PC gets bloodied, does their extra turn, then gets healed just above blodied threshold, then get hit again and bloodied again and gets extra extra turn again. rinse and repeat.
@ampersandboxttrpg7 ай бұрын
good point. Our Barbarian did not like the bloodied idea since their turn either killed the NPCs or bloodied them on their turn and doesn't want to be taking extra damage just because they are doing their job correctly.
