Thanks for your question! To be honest, I haven’t been in the habit of using study Bibles. Instead, I have taken the approach of using paraphrased Bibles like the Message, the Mirror Bible, and look at the verse through a number of translations. When I preach, I tend to use NIV because it rolls off the tongue a little easier for me. For studying, I like the Amplified because it expands the verses with a broader meaning of certain words. But one facet that I have really come to love when studying the Word of God are podcasts-the Bema podcast specifically-because it tethers Scripture with history and archeology. Historical context gives such a clearer view of certain Scripture, especially when you look at the significance of the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in 70AD, or the book of Revelation and how parts of it were written with a backdrop to the Olympic games of that time. If we don’t know about these events, then it becomes easier to weave a map of beliefs contrived by our own interpretation rather than allowing history to assist in giving the full picture. The next time I film, I will be sure to ask the audience to share their favorite study Bibles!

It’s certainly my pleasure! Another great resource to check out as you continue to dive into the Word is The Bible Project. Great breakdowns to help gain understanding on what you’re reading. Practically, I think the best advice I can give as you seek to understand Scripture is something I’ll borrow from 2 Timothy 2:15 where Paul instructs Timothy to “rightly divide the word of truth.” In other words, God’s Word is filled with a history of different covenants He makes with humanity. However, we now live in the New Covenant-established through Jesus when He died on the cross and rose again. It’s all about His grace and His finished work that saved us! With that said, viewing Scripture through the lens of the New Covenant is paramount. It would be easy to read the Old Testament and think that we had to strictly abide by the Law that was given to Moses. Although the Law was good, it was a standard no man could live by perfectly until Christ came. Jesus fulfilled the Law on our behalf so the burden is no longer on us to live by it or by our works. Now we live by the Holy Spirit who produces fruit in our life. I know all of this is a mouthful! But I say that to underline that the best way to read Scripture is through the lens of the New Covenant-that’s where we live right now! The Old Testament pointed to the Messiah. The New Testament reveals how the Messiah came in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and the rest of the New Testament clarifies what life in the Spirit as a believer and follower of Christ can look like-full of His love, grace, power, and truth. If you’re just getting started, I would start reading the four Gospels. The YouVersion and BibleGateway apps have audio Bibles you can listen to if you’re an audible learner or have little time to sit and read. Lastly, if there is someone you know who genuinely loves the Lord and knows the Bible (not just someone with head knowledge of the Bible but someone who also shows the love of Christ in their daily lives), it would be appropriate to ask them to help you along in your studying of Scripture. Maybe there’s a local Bible study you could join where you can ask questions and grow in a community environment. I admire and applaud your zeal to grow in and learn more about the Word of God. What a wonderful place to be in!

@@WordofGodASMR I find myself using the ESV 90% of the time. I just don't like the fact that known Satanist/s were helping write the NIV. I usually refer back to KJV on certain things, but I have heard NLT is good. I have a NKJV that I hardly use, But I plan to start reading from this weekend! Any older version should be fine, but I hear the newest NIV is the worst. Thank you for asking 😊
