New to fly fishing and am native to west nc any pointers?

As far as where to fish? Check out the delayed harvest rivers, they are getting stocked now and are a great way to get started targeting trout around here before moving to more technical water with wild fish. Google “NC Trout Map” or “NC delayed harvest schedule” and that should get you down the right path. Read and understand the DH regulations before you go

I know that river very well. I even recognize the spot you went to. They can be super productive, especially high up. Also, thanks for sharing your rig. I think we need to see or hear more conversation about flies leaders stuff like that that people are using.

Another great video! Love the sound of y’all exploring small creeks again. Fell in love with your channel when you were fishing places like Juniper Creek. I started fishing small creeks in my area and have discovered some hidden gems that I never thought had fish. When will we see some fishing action from the pond you built on your property? Looking forward to that.

My guess is that was probably a native southern brook trout. Southern brook trout are a subspecies of brook trout. The only way to really tell is to do a DNA analysis.

By changing my trebles to one single barbless hook in the back, would NC Wildlife laws allow me to fish spots like this with BFS gear? Or do the lures HAVE to be flies? I plan on learning about fly fishing but I would also like to use some of what I have already if I can.
@SlabDynasty15 күн бұрын
Yes, if you utilize single hook barbless you’ll be legal no matter the lure choice, as long as it’s not scented (artificial, non-scented only)

@@SlabDynasty Thanks so much for the quick response! I'm from Asheboro, but I have some friends that live in Western NC. I'll have to do some research on what places weren't as heavily affected (so I am respecting the space needed for them to continue rebuilding), but gives me some opportunities to catch new species on the JDM Reels and the boujee Megabass stuff.

West of Asheville the rivers fared much better. I’d leave anything between Asheville and Boone alone for awhile
@theheadshock349615 күн бұрын
Unless you get into the Cherokee side of things, they have some waters that are spinning/casting rod restricted, all the other types here are single hook artificial, and I fish only BFS gear in all the normal regulation waters with no issue. It's worth noting that having scented baits/live baits on your person is illegal in any of the single hook waters, so just make sure to dump any powerbaits or anything of the like out of your bag before you go out.

Looks like northern strain because of the size but I know the southern strain CAN get that big. Northerns can occupy the same high elevation streams as the southern strain but the southern strain can’t really survive in the large lakes and rivers that the northerns live in. Sure you already know all this but I got into brook trout fishing a couple years ago and their ecology is super cool. Love your videos man. I’m out of the Asheville area

Weird they didn't stock the big laurel/laurel river DH in Madison county. There was zero impact on that section from the hurricane. Not that im dying to have a bunch of knuckleheads and guides crawling all over my back yard, but it seems like a logical place to stock to give anglers a safe and unaffected place to fish

Trout released before they are over like 2 inch long will raise in creek
@wnctarheel9626Ай бұрын
I was told by a fly fishing outfitter that stocked trout do not reproduce. If this is true why can’t the hatchery’s raise trout that will reproduce? This would help local waters in the long run.
@SlabDynastyАй бұрын
Yes the state stocks sterile trout. This is due to the fact that much of the DH and HS water gets too hot in the summer. But agree that the state needs to realize there’s plenty of DH water that supports trout year round and we wish they’d manage it for self-sustaining populations
@americanson2174Ай бұрын
Hey NC how about restocking the eastern portion fresh water species from the huge fish kills following the last cpl hurricanes
@benfisher7855Ай бұрын
If NC would manage streams for wild trout this wouldn’t be as big of an issue….
@SlabDynastyАй бұрын
Agreed
@CooperJones777Ай бұрын
If it weren't for stocking, you'd have ZERO wild fish to catch. Educate yourself. Read a book maybe?
@bjnelson9490Ай бұрын
Dude, without stocked trout the wild fish would have long since been extinct
@SlabDynastyАй бұрын
@@CooperJones777 I think he means more the stocking over top of existing wild populations. Yes those wild populations originated from stocked or introduced fish, but NC doesn’t do a great job specifically managing those populations
@comfortablynumb9342Ай бұрын
When did NC quit releasing brown trout? I remember reading that it's been a long time, decades. But I caught some in NC in a couple different creeks. I watched rainbow trout being released in Wilson's Creek a couple times. Also I caught brook trout in a public pond that is free to fish. There are rainbows there too. Apparently both were stocked regularly along with catfish and bass. That's near Taylorsville behind a school called Evansdale or something like that. It's always open, I caught trout at night there.

Trout fishing is really, REALLY tough from Hendersonville, up to Asheville and east to Marion. I have hit the Catawba, North Mills and Curtis Creek recently... basically zero trout activity whatsoever. Talking to other anglers, they've all been seeing the same. Here's hoping those rivers get some stocking as well! I heard about the Marion hatchery being damaged/destroyed... I think there's an old hatchery in Old Fort that you can see from I-40. Hell, let's get that thing fired up again!
@SlabDynastyАй бұрын
Those three rivers were significantly blown out, seen videos from all three. The Catawba especially drains a lot of water and isn’t naturally a great trout stream downstream of old fort. If wildlife doesn’t stock those rivers, they’ll unfortunately fish pretty poorly for some time I’d guess.
@jee7668Ай бұрын
@@SlabDynasty In the meantime, I am going to keep heading west, and also going to start exploring more east. Fished the Ararat one day while we evac'd from the storm, but just caught sunfish. I need to find some waters east of Marion, or maybe north.

What would be the best nymph pattern to fish on the west pigeon in Haywood County tomorrow afternoon?

I like a black WD-40. It’s more a midge pattern but it just gets bites. Double nymph it with a pats rubber legs as your top fly with some weight between the two flies
