I just drove this a week ago. If you're thinking of doing it watch this video, it's really good. I made some of the stops but if I would have watched this first I would have been a little better prepared. But if you get a chance do it. Get the book at the visitors center. Black Mountain was a nice town to pull of at and spend the night. Staunton is also another gem right at the beginning. We stayed a day there because it was too foggy to start. Awesome drive. Take your time. 3-5 days.

Many if not most of the caves in the eastern US are formed in limestone. The Dan River runs mainly east, not north. And Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock parks are NOT part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The salt mines in the Saltville area are also NOT part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The places in this video are all interesting for sure but the video certainly contains many inaccuracies.

I would be ashamed to mention the granite quarry as a top wonder of the Blue Ridge. The quarry is a giant man made scar on the face of the earth. Seriously, scrape off thousands off trees and dig a big hole full of rock and now you have a tourist attraction?

Unfortunately, the introduction does NOT include Floyd County as one of the counties in the "Cascade Highlands". Then, they go on to do part of the filming in front of Mabry Mill . . . WHICH IS IN FLOYD COUNTY, VIRGINIA.

Why does he say few caves are made of limestone?? MOST caves are made of limestone! Mammoth Cave, Carlsbad, all the caves in Texas. Someone needs to clarify that in the video.
@alexandersalter6686
@alexandersalter6686 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, limestone consists of calcium carbonate (from shells of ancient sea creatures) which is easily dissolved by the slightly acidic rain and thus worn away. Most caves worldwide are made from limestone...

She reminds me of a ranger who use to visit our camp at Otter Creek when she was off duty. It was 18 years ago or so. We would feed her steaks and taters. She had a particular fondness for our sipping sauce and was a fair hand at poker. Beautiful country.
