The game itself. They're the rendered background images without any overlay on them. Images of just the backgrounds were released in various artbooks that were mostly Japan-exclusive.

Of course there is. Video games music continues to be incredible. Check out the score from Octopath Traveler, for example. Uematsu was a true pioneer, but many have continued to produce amazing stuff in his footsteps.

@@maxrusty3596I feel like a lot of new video game music is good, but the focus ends up being more about arranging ambience pieces rather than composing strong melodies. Which I think is because now it's relatively easy to arrange swelling synth pads and things like that. These ambient pieces are satisfying to the ear, get the point across, and aren't distracting to the player. As a composer, it's a safer approach. Before, using more primitive sound technology, you had to rely on strong melodies to make an emotional impact.

And it be turn based, whether like I - III or the ATB or CTB system.

Man I’m playing it rn for the first time as my FIRST FF game besides a little X when I was young and I cried at least 5x throughout the story. Love immersing myself I’m these worlds. The Osts are overtaking my usual go to anime osts I’ve been listing to my whole life.

Thanks, I'm glad! The FF9 one seemed to enter "the algorithm" and got so many comments in a short time I kinda stopped noticing, but as this and the others don't get much attention, I still notice words left on them. Been trying to think since then which other games from earlier in my life I could do a playlist for, but I think most other games already have a million song videos...

ff9 was far superior ... the way you learn skills and everything was 100 times better but to each their own

I thought ff9 was solid. It was pretty much exactly as linear as any preceding final fantasy, which never tried to be open world games except for the World of Ruin part of ff6. They fleshed out a coherent and visually interesting world. The characters seemed like adults with believable problems and motivations, and the plot only went off the rails a little bit with the 'new world filled with clones who trade souls with the OG world' and Deathguise out of nowhere ending.

FFIX's world is actually pretty open, certainly more than the pre-VI games. I do like the pre-VI games though and have them.

I agree. Ps2 has some of the best.

It was certainly a special time in console gaming. I believe it's when graphics made that jump from being being good but decided still animated, to actually sometimes sort of looking like reality. The PS1 had already nailed audio fidelity, but the 2, GameCube, and Xbox allowed textures and lighting effects that were leaps and bounds over what'd been seen before in real-time play...
