Alex Webster should've been # 1 without a doubt , especially since death metal has gone to shit . Alex Webster has a gold record so what other of those bass players have that ??? Death metal these days get to technical and has no soul to it . I don't give a fuck how fast someone can play a bass and do all that tapping bullshit ! It's about putting a brutal song together that has grove to it and I don't see any newer death metal bands that have that . Every song I heard on here is complete garbage except for cannibal corpse . Don't get me wrong I love old school death metal but how can someone listen to that trash that's on this video ?

Respectfully , I have to say the way you ranked these bassist ( for the most part ) is on how many notes they play in any given song . Bass is all about groove and enhancing the song as a whole . Therefore Webster number 1 ( easily ) and Digorgio 2 .

Rule #1 for making a "top 10/best of" KZbin video: make sure your ranking-system trolls the hell out of anybody who actually knows anything about the topic. You generate more comments that way. Good job, this list is guaranteed to cheese the f___ out of anybody who actually listens to metal.

DiGiorgio and Webster are not ranked #1 and #2 on this list. Therefore, this list is complete and utter garbage. I don't give a fig what your favorite bands are, the guys you ranked ahead of DiGiorgio and Webster, are not even in the same league as them.
@schizophreniathesociopath400
@schizophreniathesociopath400 3 жыл бұрын
I would argue they’re superior. The point of “technical” death metal is to explore your limits. Fimmers, Plummer, LaPointe, and Jaron all definitely took that approach to the max. They’re far from bad. in fact, I love both of them and they can destroy 95% of what most people consider great bassists. but technical death metal has bassists that destroy everything we thought was “good”. So, no, notoriety does not equate skill. Listen to some of these bands purely for bass and I think you’ll be blown away.

@@schizophreniathesociopath400 You are, of course, entitled to your opinion; and this is all subjective in the end. However, with all due respect, you need to start getting better crack. The idea that a subgenre label like "technical" makes a whole group of players intrinsically better than others, or that only the "technical" subgenre "explores limits", is comically irrational. ... almost as comically irrational as making the assumption that anyone who disagrees with you must not be familiar with this vaunted "technical" subgenre. I hope this doesn't come across as too insulting. My intention is not to attack your ego; merely to make you re-consider the underlying rationale of your comment.

@@fruitiusmaximus925 no offense was taken. Thank you for viewing how I would’ve taken it. That’s something many people lack. From how I view music, Tech death metal definitely shows off a musician’s skill the most. Does this mean that they’re automatically better? No. It means they have a group that is willing to let them shine as much as they’d like. Do I think Alex Webster or Steve DiGiorgio could destroy a majority of the metal scene when it comes to skill? Absolutely. However, they are not shown off as much as some of these other guys (Dominic LaPointe being a major example), hence why my belief is that they’re not better. Terrible POV on my part, yes, but my thought process works in a way that musicians who are able to make complex bass lines actually work well with the music they’re in is what makes them good. So, who knows? DiGiorgio is someone that I agree should be higher on the list because he’s shown this ability on way too many occasions. Alex, on the other hand, hasn’t. He’s still amazing and can play better than somebody like me ever could, but I don’t think he’s shown off his full potential yet. So, I’ll reserve final judgement until I think he’s at his peak. As for you, your comment pretty much said everything that needed to be said and definitely was an eye opener. I’m very focused on the obscure scene, hence why I probably think in the way I do. Popularity doesn’t make a musician worse than an obscure one, same with vice versa. I only typed the comment aggressively because you mentioned that the list was invalid without Steve and Alex being at number 1-3. I felt that it made you ignorant to the musicians that actually took that place as opposed to them. But clearly, after seeing you type, you don’t have this mindset.
@fruitiusmaximus925
@fruitiusmaximus925 3 жыл бұрын
@@schizophreniathesociopath400 Thanks, and yes, you definitely have a point, in that I kind of invalidated my own argument by starting it off with an absolute statement about something subjective. As a matter of note: DiGiorgio has played in bands that are generally considered "technical death metal". Death/Control Denied and Charred Walls of the Damned are frequently called "Technical". This reminds me a lot of how this subject was debated back when I was playing in bands, back in the 90's; but back then, it used to be the jazz guys: a lot of so-called experts would say things like "only jazz bassists really push the limits of creativity, only jazz players can be considered the best". Thus did everyone use this rationale to argue that it was a contest between Claypool and Pastorius... I've never been much of a fan of either of them. I wonder if Webster would show more if he WASN'T the primary songwriter for his band; if he had to work more to complement music written by someone else. Kind of like Billy Gould from Faith No More: Gould is a phenomenal player and an even better songwriter; but when he is playing his own music, he is all about song structure and plays very simplistic lines. The only time you ever really get to hear him cut loose and show what he can do, is when he's soloing through Black Sabbath's 'War Pigs'.
