And beside the two you missed, Alaska and Hawaii, there should be another - Atlantic. Which covers Massachusetts to Maine. But they didn’t want another for a tiny but. Also all of our mainland time zones are shifted by 20 minutes or so eastward. Their geographic centers are about 20 minutes ahead of solar noon. This was like built in DST to start with.

The eastern provinces of Canada just north of Maine use the Atlantic time zone, so you are absolutely right about how the northeast strip of US states should be in the Atlantic instead of Eastern time zone. Thank you as well for the tidbit about the mainland time zones being misaligned by 20 minutes! Do you know if that was done deliberately or by accident?

@@andyschompingatthebit Not sure on the reasoning for the offsets. But their effect is that we should have the Atlantic TZ - because it didn't get offset into the north east. This lack of an Atlantic TZ makes this whole region beg for permanent DST because it gets dark there much earlier than most of the eastern timezone. Basically Indiana & Michigan should be Central. Dakotas & Nebraska, western Kansas & Oklahoma, and western half of Texas should all be Mountain. West Idaho, NW Montana should be Pacific. The results is all of these areas are already "sprung ahead" and DST makes things worse. This is why Indiana for years didn't observe DST and now has a wonky timezone map. Living in one of them, the idea of permanent DST really bothers me. I'd essentially have "noon" on my clock at 10:30 by the sun. In the winter I wouldn't get sunlight until after 9AM. Yes I am in the end DST crowd. Lets live by the sun cycles again, not Ben Franklins asinine games.

That's an excellent point, and I too am in favor of getting rid of DST.

Nope. There are 6 time zones in the US. There's also the Alaska time zone and the alutian/Hawaii time zone. They are part of the US, too.

Excellent point. I was referring to the 4 used in the lower 48 states of the Continental US, but Alaska and Hawaii time zones are also a part of the United States. Thank you for bringing that to my attention and helping clarify.
