Derek is such a jerk. And yet why does Candace take a slap to the face and kiss him goodnight? Charlie loved his sister and was concerned about her and yet she told him not to tell thier parents? Oh and she could handle him?

This is very common in physical abuse situations. When someone who you're very close with and have a good relationship with hits you in a fit of rage, you often forgive them because you'll make excuses for it. Some usually say "He/she was just angry, he/she would never intentionally hurt me" and that mindset sticks. Due to that mindset, you don't want this person who you're close with to get in trouble since they didn't do anything necessarily wrong (Which isn't true, nobody should hitting you even when they're angry) So you end up forgiving them, not because you want to but because you just want everything to go back to normal. Candace does so, so now she's back to being lovey dovey with Derek
