The Negrinis have a wider range of gaps to play with....plus I can hang it around my neck instead of maybe losing it on the floor. As a single-person operation, anything that speeds things up or is more efficient for me is a good thing!

Great tip! Just when I thought you have shown us everything in your bag of tricks, you give us another one. I've only started home armoring for the past few months, but this one sure would have been helpful when I was putting some cant on a few blades. Here's one for the amateur armorers that i figured out this weekend after screwing up a foil rewiring because I didn’t pull the wire quite taut enough before taping it to the tang, bending and applying glue: Bend it an inch or so the other way and then tape it down on the tang. Man, once I bent the blade the correct way, that wire was sitting nice and snug in the groove.

never used an accelerator.. do they help much ? usually use acetone on a cotton bud then flex the blade pulling in the groove and super glue... seems to work well...
@samsignorelli22 күн бұрын
When you do as many rewires as I do, it helps a ton. Superglue takes 242 hours to fully cure and set. Accelerators do that in about three seconds.

every time i have been told a box wasn't working and checked it out.. it was the ground wire.. or the spools... i have never seen a box itself fail.. yes have seen a [power source as the problem - bt that was becasue they fencers had bumped the box and the power plug came loose... why oh why is their first place to go the armourer??? i have pointed out to a club that was using leon paul boxes (from memory they were the 3 weapon c90FES models from the early 90's.. ) that the globes were broken and there was no covering so the broken wires from the globes were sticking up and could be a danger (broken glass.. the 12 V shock.. ) and that club had a lot of kids there .. but they took it as i was criticising their club.. not looking at it and saying - ok.. a safety issue...
@samsignorelliАй бұрын
Boxes DO go bad on occasion. Usually I find that it's due to either a little bit of abuse by people setting up and tearing down, or from being bounced around in a car or truck going from event to event. There's a REASON we have spares in the natjonals crate, for example.

So when grinding the blade what dremel part are you using and is it viable on foils too
@samsignorelliАй бұрын
The wheel is the Dremel 545 Diamond Wheel. You may have to search for a compatible alternative, as they aren't as easy to find as they used to be. They're thin enough to fit into a foil groove and don't actually cut the steel, hence why I use them

Thanks for this--I've been learning armory for my college club (working with miniscule budget and lots of old hand-me-down equipment... lots of stuff needs fixing and someone's gotta do it lol) and I've found the process rewarding, if incredibly frustrating at times. Mostly I've been working on weapons and cords, though I'm about to tackle some reel repairs (and maybe look at old scoring machines soon?) to get some more strips up and running. I've been curious about getting more involved in the armory world, and it's encouraging to hear getting started is about as simple as volunteering. What would you say the baseline level of experience should be? I'm confident I could pick it up, but I would like to be as little of a drag on setup and teardown as possible, so I don't want to go in completely unprepared. Would love to know your thoughts and any other details about what the process entails.

Nothing is going to get the green out...it's permanent. And any sort of oil is going to kill the lame. Washing it like I show is perfectly fine. The important thing is that the green areas conduct with less than 5 ohm resistance...and I have seen some pretty green lames pass with flying colors.
