The lake also has other name in local language : Nyanza In 1858, British explorer John Hanning Speke renamed the lake after Queen Victoria of England. Speke was searching for the source of the Nile River when he discovered the lake. His claim that Lake Victoria was the source of the Nile caused debate in the scientific community at the time. Some African people are calling for the lake to be renamed back to its original name or to have a new African name chosen
