This is fantastic! I love sunfish, they’re so wonderfully bizarre. I’m really curious about the people who do eat them, I wonder what parts they use and how it’s prepared, since it’s so unappetizing to other people. I wish nobody would eat them. Good luck with future research!

That's how science works. In order to find out about different species we have to dissect them. Other wise we'd be pretty clueless

I would be the worst scientist or at least most expensive when it comes to PPE usage. i would be in 2 full body hazmat suits encased in a old timey deep sea diving suit before even entering the same room as a dead one of those things.

Is no one gonna talk about how their going extinct💀
@SwimmingHeadProductions
@SwimmingHeadProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a marine biologist, they are not believed to be going extinct. The species is noted to be abundant throughout its range in the scientific literature. Having said this, the specimens shown here were collected having stranded on a beach so only dead specimens were used for this research project.

I wonder if the stingers still work dry
@SwimmingHeadProductions
@SwimmingHeadProductions 5 жыл бұрын
Good question! I didn't test this (we always wore gloves!), but yes they might still work... the stinging cells have an auto-deployment mechanism, kinda like a firing pin and so these can be triggered even when the organism is dead. If it was dry and the cellular structure wasn't too altered by the drying process, this might still be able to fire! Watch your fingers!
