These are the complete lyrics to the song written by Jimmy Dorsey and Paul Madeira Mertz, copyrighted in 1942. Paul Madeira Mertz had been the piano player in Bix Beiderbecke's band with Jimmy Dorsey's brother Tommy on trombone in the 1920s. Later Mertz worked on film scores. Both the 1941 and 1946 versions feature solos by Jimmy Dorsey in the break. These are the lyrics: "Said I, many times, love is illusion, A feeling result of confusion. With knowing smile, and blazing sigh, A cynical so-and-so was i. I felt so sure, so positive, So utterly, unchangingly certain. But I never was aware of love and you, And suddenly I realized There was love and you, And I, and I. In this world of ordinary people Extraordinary people I’m glad there is you In this world of over-rated pleasures Of under-rated treasures I’m so glad there is you I live to love, I love to live with you beside me This role so new, I’ll muddle through with you to guide me In this world where many, many play at love And hardly any stay in love I’m glad there is you More than ever, I’m glad there is you."

Dee Parker, who passed in 2000, was my mother. She was a GREAT singer and mom.

Sorry for your loss Nick. I know most people prefer the Bob Eberly version of this song and I also like Bob's singing with Jimmy Dorsey's Orchestra but this version I like as well be cause of your Mother's singing and also the pretty alto work of Jimmy Dorsey on this record. Best regards!

I just today remembered this tune so you tubed it and happily stumbled over this first recording of Dee Parker performing. I then followed up listening to Sinatra, Sarah, and conclude that your Mom got it right the first time. I hope she told you many stories of her experiences working and traveling with the big bands. They all set the bar pretty high for all others to jump over.

Thank you for this treat today on KZbin, and for including the recording date which is always of great historical interest to me.

It's a shame, the original from 1941 with Bob Eberly on vocals is better; that's one people also should know

The original 1941 Decca recording featuring Bob Eberly on vocals is on KZbin as a "Topic". Search for the title using "Jimmy Dorsey & His Orchestra - Topic" in the search terms. There are several postings of the 1941 recording.

Jimmy was the premier alto player, of the era, but it always strikes me, when listening to him, all these years later, that much of his work still sounds contemporary! Goodman and Miller and Tommy still sound great, today, but they sound 'big band era;' Jimmy simply sounds like... jazz! I can close my eyes and imagine him, today, on a small stage, or in a club, wailing out Tangerine or Dance Ballerina or Green Dolphin Street...or I'm Glad There is You!

The preamble to the song is left out of most recordings. These are the introductory lyrics from the sheet music: "Said I, many times, love is illusion, A feeling result of confusion. With knowing smile, and blazing sigh, A cynical so-and-so was i. I felt so sure, so positive, So utterly, unchangingly certain. But I never was aware of love and you, And suddenly I realized There was love and you, And I, and I." The song was composed by Jimmy Dorsey and Paul Madeira Mertz.

I never knew about this remake, but believe it or not, this is not the original. The original was also by The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, but with Bob Eberly, his famous male vocalist, singing the part, from 1941, also on Decca. You should hear that version if you love this. Even better.
