What is that you used for testing shutter speed?

I bought a "CLAed" Opema II from this Cupog guy, and I tested the camera with film as soon as I got it. The results showed shutter capping, and lens front focus. When I asked him and showed him the photos indicating problems, he started to quibble instead of admit he overlooked the problems. Won't deal with him again for sure.

Be careful. I sent CUPOG/Geyza Dunay a Praktisix IIa for repair in the beginning of August 2016 and then he stopped answering my emails. Its November now and there are still no answers and still no camera. Think twice before sending to him.

I'm surprised to hear this, because I bought several Pentacon Six cameras and lenses from him and they worked great. My friends also had great experiences with their Flexarets and P6 cameras.

+AmbiencePT That being said, I would never recommend those cameras to anyone but crazy people like me.

+AmbiencePT : I was surprised to live thru this with him too ! I checked for his reputation before dealing with him. Everybody can make mistakes but honest sellers acknowledge and try to repair. He treated me like an cheater ('This is not the camera I sold you' !!??) when he got the camera (P6) back. He CLAd it a second time and here's the result... Did you shoot slides with your P6s ?

+Karim Amrani Yes I shot Fuji Provia and they came out great ! I used both Biometar 80mm and Sonnar 180mm that I got in mint condition.

+AmbiencePT So you do have nicely working P6s !! I'm glad for you :) I was told to rely on film latitude... I have those lenses, in decent condition. And a Flektogon 50mm. Too bad the camera bodies working condition is usually not on par with the lenses' qualities... ;)

I am a former camera repair technician. What I can tell is that you could not expect with a cloth focal plane shutter the same results and accuracy as a modern metallic electronically controlled shutter. Exaktas and Pentacon six uses some semi artisanal assembly technics and components, and with mechanical play, lack of quality control (even on those marked 1Q), inertia of curtains movements and from the ribbons, add to this fact. Another thing is that I think a 1/500s for a 1/1000s is a very good result for such kind of cameras, and you could not expect better. All other medium format makers used leaf shutter, and even with Compurs and Copal consistency of exposure is +/-20% of the selected speed. This is factory specs. It was the film in most part that compensate these variations and the work under the enlarger. the only medium format camera I saw that had consistent shutter speeds with focal plane shutter were the Bronica EC and ECTL series with electronically controlled shutter. With a camera well adjusted, of course. Concerning the exaktas, you need to have the original type of curtains because otherwise this will add friction inside the shutter crate and develop uneven exposure time. And even with this, it is very difficult to achieve the correct and even shutter speeds. It is a very early design back from the thirties. Other camera makers then used ball bearings, and more precise machined parts, and more complex designs too, like Leicas M, Nikon RF and SLR's. If you know the real exposure time, then it is not a problem to make picture. In black and white, you can overexpose in a wide range and it will be always useable for analog printing. But with poor scanners this is another story.

+Mael Bilquey : Thanks for your comment Mael. I appreciate ! I understand that old shutters can not be brought to exact speed. I have repaired shutters of a Graflex 3x4 SLR and its British cousins (Houghton, Butcher,...). These cameras are from the beginning of the 20th century and I'm glad their 1/1000s speed is shooting at 1/500s. :) The problem here is that the repairman states that they are on factory specs. They are not and he would not admit it, as He knows it all and I'm just a mere idiot... One of the Exaktas I sent was shooting perfectly (speeds on specs) but had a pinholed shutter. He changed the shutter cloth and the speeds are now off. I could live with speeds being a bit off : as you mentionned, film latitude can help and I can also adjust for a slower-than-set speed... One of the Exaktas has inconsistent speeds : I can only rely on film latitude for this one... I have a third Exakta that I will repair myself (shutter cloth is bad) and see if I get what I want...

Concerning Cupog, I just bought from him a "CLA" Exakta Varex IIa, because I have not much time now to repair my own cameras. I thought this would be a ready to shoot camera. Shutter was capping at 1/500 and 1/1000s, the camera is full of dirt mixed with oil, some srews are damaged, the threads on the cast aluminium body too, the camera was overall dirty. This is what leaves a "CLA". After 4 hours of work it works decently but I cannot achieve correct high shutter speeds because the curtains, that had been replaced in the past, are not exactly in the goo position.

There is nothing more annoying than loosing money and time because of so called "professionnals". The only thing that makes me feeling better is that I will soon receive a resilvered mirror for an Exkata VP B that I intend to put back to life. Very clean, but with dead curtains. I am trying to make a small folding machine in order to recreate the metal ends of the original curtains. We'll see...
