Talarem protects them from attacks not because he personally cares for them, but because they increase his chances of defeating Sovereign. He views the Collectors as rivals that can obstruct his conquest for power, so he's not above using his enemies as tools to eliminate them.

I apologize for the heavy subject matter. I truly empathize with anyone who has dealt with cancer or knows someone who has. This entire animation was my father's idea from back in December. He wanted me to depict the experience of chemotherapy treatment for those who don't know the process and are likely afraid of it. I hope that you all can enjoy this short film as you would my other videos. My next one will likely be far less serious.
