Tears me up every time I see that scene. The indignity of it all..

This movie not only points out the injustices done to black females, but also those done to all females who were assistants and were never given credit or even the proper tools or information to do the job correctly, but who were the ones criticized when they were unable to do their job effectively!

Great "white savior" scene that never happened in reality

We watched this movie with our kids when they were younger. It is a story about the struggle to get to the moon wrapped around a larger depiction of race as a social construct, and that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies. This is an example of the CRT content that MAGA nuts moan about corrupting our future generations. I do not understand how anyone could have issues with this film being included in a grade school curriculum.

Costner's stunned reaction to, basically, "My time's being wasted because of WHAT???"... is timeless. True NASA back in the day. My dad was one of the first Native Americans promoted to management (UTC/NASA). At the exact time this movie takes place. William Gladden. NASA folks, being very scientifically literate, understood "race" doesn't actually exist in any of the Physical Sciences. Such as Biology.

The real Katherine Johnson maintained that there was no discrimination at NASA and that the segregation of bathrooms was ignored by both white and black.

Here's what Jim Bridenstine, one of the NASA directors, said about Katherine Johnson : “Katherine's work included key contributions to our early flights. Her calculations, such as those that helped Project Apollo's lunar lander synchronize with the command and service module orbiting the moon, have ensured the safe return, and the success of the mission " It should also be noted that at the very end of her career, after having made an eminent contribution to the development of the International Space Station, she was working on missions to Mars. 🌠

As a white man, I am so very glad that I have no memory of "Colored Only " bathrooms in my youth. There probably were but not where I was. I am 73 years old. I live in Washington PA and have all of my life except for the 4 years in the United States Marine Corps.

It would have been so much better if he had taken down a sign that said the restroom was for whites only. I think this was a big mistake in the movie.

This scene is pore moonshine. The NASA toilets were not segregated at the time. (There were videos made about it, you can find them on youtube.) However, we live in an era when the blacks must be presented as victims and therefore the screen writes had to come with Jim Crow naratives.

At NASA we're all the same color should be our battle cry of " In America there are no color issues when pathetic racists see racism everytime they open their blinder covered eyes!"

This scene really made me realize what it must have been like to be black in America then. I am equally ashamed as a 68 yo white woman that this was real and racial prejudice is still part of our society today. Lord we must try harder !! 🙏

In 1958 all Nasa bathrooms were integrated... this scene taken place in 1961 so it is not accurate... this book was very loosely based on the facts...

This is a great scene for sure. It was done to portray a common situation at this time in history. In an interview with Katherine, the lady who actually lived what the movie is about, she said that this never actually happened to her. I her particular case she was accepted as part of the team in this regard.
