I studied under Stanley like 15 years ago, I thought phenotype was the observed output of the network aka genes(genotype) has terminology changed? Ex. blue eyes is a phenotype, or how an agent responds to stimulus..

About the first straight walker, couldn't it be explained through angular momentum? Like, supposing gravity matters, it looks like conservation of angular momentum would heavily favor movement forward rather than backwards (if that also lead to rotation). Sideways movement would also be a bit harder, so on average you'd expect to move forward, I think.

Happy I found this, but 28 lectures, really Josh, after all the hours of trying to become familiar with Michael's work. It is really apparent that your integration of the science has been rewarding for both of you, but which has the ability to benefit all of us. Absolutely wild.

I am writing this comment with immense gratitude and admiration for the incredible lectures you have shared on evolutionary robotics. As a PhD student in robotics, I have found your classes to be truly inspiring and motivating for my own research. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to you for making these lectures available to the public. Your decision to share your knowledge and expertise has had a profound impact not only on my understanding of evolutionary robotics but also on my overall scientific approach to the field. It is truly commendable how you have embraced a general scientific approach in addressing various subjects throughout the playlist. Your lectures have not only expanded my knowledge but have also sparked new ideas and directions for my own work. Your ability to explain complex concepts with clarity and enthusiasm is remarkable, and it has made learning a joyous experience. Once again, thank you, Prof. Bongard, for your exceptional teaching and for being an outstanding role model in the robotics community. Your lectures have left an indelible mark on my academic journey, and I am excited to continue exploring the fascinating world of evolutionary robotics. With sincere appreciation, João Cunha

Amazing, this is really exciting, I am seriously considering grad school and research, considering leaving silicon valley and wasting my life making toys and working on this area, I am so glad you share these lectures as I studied cs/stats but bio/chem were areas I always loved learning about but didn't know how much exciting work is happening here. Really glad you are sharing this, makes me excited and hopeful for the future long term

He would say the same thing. They are using supervised/unsupervised/reinforcement learning, all of which are mathematical models that use past data to train(pattern matching). So, pretty much nothing has changed. But that doesn't mean it isn't useful. If I am communicating with an AI agent who is believable in their mannerisms, responses etc. , then I wouldn't really care if it thinks precisely like humans. Bound to affect low-skill jobs like online customer service.

Strictly, in silico, i.e. simulation, is still physical reality. The computer bits however they are stored physically are stored physically. Hence, even simulation on a computer is reality, in a sense. My point is: try not to downplay or diminish simulations! That is the sort of thing reality deniers/math-haters/CGI-haters/flat-earthers/creationists/AGW deniers do. They are a perverted extremist form of materialist: belittling ideas and theories JUST for being ideas and theories, without regard to content.
