Hi Annabelle, I am so impressed with the work you’re doing to help other kids who are growing up with hearing disabilities. I have an unusual problem and I wondered if you could help me. I’m a lawyer and I represent a little two-year-old girl who had a hearing loss because she was placed next to her air blower machine right after she was born. Trying to represent her, I need to describe to the jury what kind of challenges she may face with her partial hearing loss and hearing aids and I’ve been looking for someone who could help me in this area. I’m wondering if you would contact me if I provided my information. I would really appreciate it, Elizabeth Faiella

What are listening breaks? My 3rd grader was just diagnosed and got hearing aides. We are still setting up her testing for the IEP/504.
@annabellejacobs73052 жыл бұрын
This allows your child to go into a quiet room or out in the hallway for a bit. Listening fatigue is a real thing. Sometimes children just need a quiet moment.
@ronunderwood80992 жыл бұрын
Sometimes listening breaks will involve removing listening devices (CI sound processors or hearing aids) for a little while and having quiet time.

Do you have microtia? My son only has one canal, so he can only wear one AirPod. I’m sure he is missing a lot. He does not wear aides. The bone conductor idea now offers regular headphones for everyone. Due to runners needing to hear cars etc. It’s the same thing as a cochlear. He won’t wear them though. 😡 So, from the video, I cannot even see them. Are they able to fit comfortably in both ears? Do you think only one would be sufficient since his other canal is closed, and cannot support the size of an AirPod?! Thank you for making these videos. I love that you’re doing this, and it sounds like you know what you need, and you have succeeded that way. I wish my son was more open to all of this. Video idea, PLEASE!! Any tips or tricks for taking notes in class. Do you type or write? Since lip reading is a big part (my son included), he is not good at taking notes. He needs to be watching, and like you said…it does take a second to process what they’re saying! I HAVE to help him get organized, be able to keep up in class. High school starts in August! 😰 his 504 isn’t worth anything at his school, unfortunately. Do you know of any clever tricks on the computer to help organize and speed up his note taking, so he can also process what the teacher is saying as well. He is just missing so much, and it shows. Again, thank you! Have a wonderful summer!

I love your content! My son is 14. This year has been really tough. I just heard about your channel. Hopefully you will have more, so my son and I can watch you together. If you have any tricks on note taking, staying organized, not missing in person instruction (say for quarantine close exposure, if you get exhausted easier than other kids, ANYTHING to help get my son organized and keep up). I’m sure there are lots of neat things to help on the computer, he just isn’t so sure about them. Do you record lessons if you have to miss school and still be expected to take a test when you get back? Do you get extra time sometimes? Do you type or write notes? While reading lips and writing or typing, does that get confusing? I’m sorry to ask so much. It has just been really difficult. He also struggled with focusing. Not hyper, just focus. That could be Bc of hearing as well. Thank you for showing others how successful/ kind/ helpful/smart and caring for others that are starting out on their journey! You are an inspiration to many! Hopefully you realize that!!

Hi! Sorry to be getting back to you so late. I am working on a new video where I will talk about my accommodations for school and how I stay organized. I am sorry that your son is having a tough time. From personal experience I can tell you that it can get very overwhelming for me to listen to a lecture and at the same time take notes. It can lead to trouble focusing because it requires so much focus and concentration to be listening so hard and also taking notes. I get so exhausted by the end of the day because of this and when my teacher wears a mask it makes it so much worse. I do get extra time and your son should be able to as well because with a hearing loss it takes longer to process all types of language such as both reading and listening. I tend to write out my notes but it really depends on which he prefers and which comes to him more naturally. Hopefully this helps a bit and keep a look out for a new video soon! Thank you!

Thanks for doing these videos. my 2yr old has moderate/severe hearing loss. i'm curious if you've been to concerts and how they sound with the hearing aids.
@annabellejacobs73052 жыл бұрын
I’m glad my videos are helpful!! Thanks so much for the question, I will address it more in another video but I have been to 2 concerts and I don’t think my hearing aids make it sound any different except for the fact that it may not be as overwhelmingly loud. My hearing aids make sure that super loud sounds aren’t overwhelmingly unbearable which is nice. I wish all the best for you and your 2yr old!

Thank you for these videos. My daughter is 6 with hearing loss in her right ear. She speaks clearly and nobody had any idea she had this loss until the public school she attends did random hearing checks. My daughter had never said anything as I assume she just thought it was normal. We go tomorrow for a CT scan and then to the University hospital for hearing aids and whatever help they suggest. I want to build her a community of kids with hearing loss that she can refer to when times may get rough as she ages and has questions. One of my questions for you is do you personalize your aids to make them look "fashionable" like people have funky glasses? Also, did you encounter any school mates who were unnecessarily hard on your psyche? How did you deal with those situations?

Thank you so much for posting these videos. My little boy Rowen is 10 months and has severe hearing loss and I appreciate so much hearing you speak to your journey … this helps me connect with my son and hopefully based on your experience help support him. Were you ever a candidate for CI’s? I only ask because my son may be a candidate and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Hi!! Sorry for getting back to you so late. I was never a candidate for CI's so I don't know too much about it unfortunately. I did work with 3 and 4 year olds with CI's for a few weeks last summer and they were all super bright and curious. I hope Rowen is doing well!!

Loved this and can't wait to show my 11 year old Annabelle who wears 2 hearing aids as well. We agree that the masks are such a pain with them- and try adding glasses to that combo. People have no idea of the challenges- thank you for being willing to share your journey.

That’s amazing you also have an Annabelle who wears two hearing aids!! And I know masks have been terrible and glasses even worse on top of that!! I am supposed to wear glasses all the time but I only wear them for reading. Such a pain and I hope that soon we won’t have to wear masks anymore.

Thank you for your videos! My son was also diagnosed at birth with mod-severe hearing loss. I was just wondering, why do you read lips, is it bc you miss sounds when someone is speaking? Thanks again for your maturity and sharing this knowledge. I hope my son can look to you as inspiration as he grows up! (and his mom too)
@annabellejacobs73052 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! It’s because my hearing aids don’t pick up everything and especially with background noise. I also find myself having to think a lot about what someone is saying when I can’t read their lips. I may talk more about this in a future video. Thank you so much and I wish all the best for your son!

Thank you for your videos! My 5 year old daughter wears hearing aids and your videos give me great insights into her perspective. For a future video, I'd love to know more about your experiences going to the movie theater (do you request the assisted listening devices or captions) and in school situations like assembly or the cafeteria. Thanks so much!
@annabellejacobs73052 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your questions! Those are great questions for me to talk about in another video. However, in terms of movie theaters I have never done anything differently because they are always so loud. I will talk more about school situations in another video but situations like the cafeteria are tough because of background noise and I rely more on reading lips in those situations, thanks again!!
