Thank you Christian. Marybeth, your sound for me came right at the 19 minute stage when you switched over, I wasn't aware you were both in the same room at the start, so now I got it. It is always great listening to you both. Question, was there a RM effect in action for us last night Christian NZ time Christian? Thank you.

Which course or program did you both complete to learn about the aurora in depth?
@ShelbydiamondstarАй бұрын
I am currently in the SWEN program offered from Millersville University. But mostly self taught up to this point. Christian has a background in Astrophysics... he's a *bit* smarter than I am. LOL...

As she mentioned I have Astrophysics degree, but I've also been in the space weather field just a little over 12 years now, some of that overlapping while I was attending university so I had a good deal of resources to work with to learn from.

Is our magnetic field weakening? This is getting quite ridiculous! I note they have told us our core has slowed and even reversed, this is the magneto generating magnetic field and is mainstream discussion now without alarming anybody obv. We are also getting a tonne of quakes and volcanoes going off, very hard not to notice now. Also I it possible this sort of energy we are seeing, could come from a red/brown dwarf? Thanks for any discussion u might have
@ShelbydiamondstarАй бұрын
Every so often, Earth does "flip" its magnetic field. It's on a much, much slower scale and it doesn't happen abruptly, either. Can take hundreds of years. There's a number of papers out there on this subject. And it is a common question -mainly because there's a lot of doomsday things out there. However, the good thing is - research has been done by mathematicians and scientists in this area, and even at its weakest, it is still enough to protect us from the worst CMES. What this means for animals like birds who use this to migrate or our navigation systems? now that'll be the big problem! Keep this in mind, as well - we currently live in a HYPER connected world. So things that happen regularly "seem" to be more simply because we know about it instantly! We are monitoring things at a rate that was unheard of - or impossible - even 50 years ago. As far as the sun goes - it still has a few billion years left before it starts to die. :) I think this is a topic that is worth discussion, and we will do this. We will dig up the papers that have been done on this - as per usual! :)

Do the comments and questions from the livestream get cleared out? I was hoping to review them.

It shouldn't be cleared.... I always have issues seeing it afterward on the phone. But if I watch it from desktop, that chat should pop up. It does populate as the video plays.

KP is a starting point for most people, but once you take more interest in Aurora chasing it is well worth learning the other tools, so you can anticipate when there is a good chance of capturing Aurora, when some time to get there (30 minutes to an hour in some cases), where as the KP is an average of 3 hours in the past. Looking at the Mag + Solar Wind chart, how do you tell the direction of the flux rope and what is the affect of that please Christian? The ground was red at one stage where I was during the May 11th 2024 Aurora. This was a fantastic and very informative and fun video guys, can't wait to listen to more 🙂

That aspect is something Andy keeps under wraps. He spent a very long time developing the process, so he's been pretty guarded over it. The good thing is it is out there, and free to use, which is amazing!

Hi Marybeth & Christian, I really loved this podcast, thank you. I knew about what you discussed, but I gained a lot from the detail you went into. I appreciate the detail level you went into on the, in particular the magnetometer chart explaining how to recognize the dip and what that means. Always keen to learn more about how you determine what type of Aurora (flux rope) in the RTSW chart. I understand the relevance of Bt and Bz but not what By shows us, if you could more elaborate on By at some stage that would be appreciated. Thanks again to you both.

How is that related to manipulations of the ionosphere? I have never heard such terrifying mechanical roaring sounds,and constant, ongoing rumbling for hours,thunder like yesterday.also I ve never seen so many intense and frequent lightning bolts during normal storms in my life like this summer.there s something weird going on in our atmosphere,no one can convince me otherwise. Also clouds are very essential for the regulation of earths temperature, so the fact this is not regarded much relevant is interesting.
