But it’s helped to build an industry of self-proclaimed gurus who are selling courses about how to make long, complicated prompts with a thousand instructions in them. The secret in how to use a tool like ChatGPT is hidden in plain sight. Chat. These tools are chat bots. You don’t need to prompt. You just need to ask. This is what chatbots have always been made for. Ask questions, get answers. So if you want your AI tool to do something, ask it what it needs from you to do it. State what you want, “I want to write a great post for LinkedIn” and then ask, “What do you need from me, one question at a time.” And then it will prompt you for the information it needs to come up with a great post for LinkedIn. No long prompts. No $49 a month expert community memberships. No paid courses required.

The last thing I ever thought that I would become is a good salesperson. To be honest, I was terrified of it. After all, asking for money is so… ew. But after I threw myself into a sales role after my 2017 startup collapsed before it even got commercialised, i learned a few things. 1. Even when I was pushed to do hard selling, I found that being honest about the pros and cons of the product worked better than baffling clients with bullsh%t. 2. Even though I was trained to overpromise the results my clients would get, I found that it worked better when I started from the result shtt my client was after. 3. Even though I was told to always push the product and package that was going to giveme the best commission, I found that I did better when I listened first to what the client thought was important for them. 4. And the biggest thing I was trained to do was to prressure clients to make instant decisions. Yet I got more repeat business when I let them take their time to compare the market. What I learned most? Selling’s about trust, not tricks.

It’s about how they managed a second or third act in their lives. By the time you get to fifty years old, you’ve been through some stuff. You probably got married and divorced at least once. You probably changed career at least once. And you’ve probably been betrayed by people you trusted several times. You’ve got a few scars. And while I love to hear the story of some bright, young and enthusiastic 19-year-old who became a CEO straight out of high school, they’re frankly doing that in the one time in history where it’s easier than it’s ever been to do that. But I do love a story of someone who has been through a few bumps in life. And I love it even more when they come through those bumps and move past the temptation to become bitter, jaded and spent. Your story is far from over. You’re just entering the second chapter. It would be a shame if you let a lack of confidence because of your age stop you from sharing it with us.

Social media is toxic because you are toxic. Oh I know. You expected me to agree with you right? What is it that makes you think that social media is toxic? Politics. People arguing. Constant ads. Unrealistic beauty standards. Here’s something to blow your mind. You are the reason why you see all that stuff. You are continually feeding your brain full of all that stuff because you love the drama. Don’t pretend you don’t. If you didn’t love the drama you wouldn’t be getting all this stuff in your feed. I don’t get any of that stuff in my feed. Why? Because I might love the drama, but social media isn’t where I get my fix from. I watch Bridgerton and The Resident on Netflix to get that. On social media, I’m here to learn. I’m here to grow. I’m here to be uplifted. And what do I see? All the stuff that achieves exactly that. Social media is not the toxic one in this relationship. You are. And the sooner you realise that, the sooner you’ll see the value in social media and stop sounding like a contrarian cliche on an ABC TV talk show.

If it’s not about solving unhappiness, you’ll go broke. That is big lesson I learned from my 2017 failed startup. I didn’t know what made my potential customers unhappy, so I had no idea what they wanted. So I built something that no one was asking for that solved no problem that any of them was having and sat there for six months wondering why my brilliant idea didn’t take off. If what you’re thinking of starting doesn’t somehow solve someone’s unhappiness about something in their life, then you’re dead in the water before you’ve even launched. Which means that all that brilliance, all that hard work, all those late nights thinking, researching, designing and building will mean nothing simply because you missed the most important question of all. What makes my customer unhappy?

Confidence is not something we’re born with. It’s something we master. First, Master the art of thought. Then Master the craft of writing. Master the skill of speaking. Spot problems. They’re everywhere. Set bigger goals. You’re an adult. You’re allowed to think bigger. Learn how to learn again because education isn’t something we only do when we’re young. Absorb everything that makes your mind grow and adapt to any situation. That's how you become indispensable, interesting - and yes - much more confident. So confident, in fact, that you might just find that it’s not you, but your current employer that is dispensable.

Instagram has overtaken Facebook as the most used social media app in Europe. This is the first time that the blue app has fallen behind it’s younger sister in a major market. So what does it mean? Europe has never had as much heavy use of Facebook as markets like the US and Australia. Where we are heavy users of Facebook Messenger, Europeans are far bigger users of WhatsApp which isn’t directly linked to your Facebook login, but your phone number. But it also means that we are changing the way we use social media. The idea of an everything app like Facebook has given way to using certain apps for certain things. Facebook for interest groups, Marketplace and people we know in real life. Instagram for great photos, trend following and fun videos. LinkedIn for our professional and business lives.

How do you do all of these events at the same time with the different social media portals?
@dantestjames
@dantestjames 21 күн бұрын
I hope I am understanding the question correctly - but the events themselves are in the ticketing platform. You can then share the link through to the different platforms or create events within Facebook and LinkedIn, for example and use the ticketing link as the place to book the tickets. Do be aware though, that the social platforms don't encourage off-site link and don't make it very clear to people that they need to book via the link - not just RSVP through a button on Facebook or LinkedIn.

Well that totally makes sense to me. Thank you for articulating that! I have job interviews coming up and was getting very stressed about speaking to a panel. First piece of advice I heard that helped me get through one interview was “think of it as a meeting, not an interview”. Worked beautifully. Now I’m going to use your words of wisdom to talk about things I know well which will give me confidence and hopefully convince the panel that I am the perfect one for the job. 😊. Thanx again!!

Interesting take! I don't think it is inherently wrong to have your prices lower when you start. For ex, when I started my detailing business, I was charging $50 for interior, $50 for exterior. 5 years later, that same car is $225 for the interior and $175 for the exterior. In that time, the quality of products I use, my quality of service, and etc. have all gone up, allowing me to justify those changes. I have felt bad for increasing prices on customers I've had since the beginning, but the ones who stay understand that they are paying for a certain level of expertise and quality. Not saying you can infinitely increase prices, but I think this topic a bit more nuanced. I would not have been able to charge my current rates when I first started. But then comes the other issue of any service business- there will always be someone who will do it quicker, cheaper, etc., but thats a diff topic for a diff video.

One element that affects the freelancer market are those who go offshore to pay a third-world country citizen pennies to achieve the same result. I see jobs all the time people wanting blogs researched and written for $50. Some try to compete using AI which creates more problems.
@dantestjames
@dantestjames 3 ай бұрын
If we can be replaced that easily by either an offshore resource or an AI, then what we were doing wasn't particularly skilled in the first place - and this is the issue with an education system that pushes us to specialise - and an economy that is based around employment: both force us to specialise to a point where we are vulnerable to these outside forces. We've believed the lie that "the riches are in the niches" for so long because at some point it was true. But when what we do is so specialised that we're not much good at anything else, we are the most replaceable that we could possibly be. It's hard for those who have been doing the same thing for a long time.

Increase channel reach: Re write this the same way but add more of essay vibes to it , like you see many other opinion channels do . Make sure to maintain the honesty at some points . Id love to watch this with just a bit more "meat" in it , like exposition of the problem based on arguments, a bit of dead internet theory....

I can't speak for the rest, but I avoid Mainstream News outlets. I'm tired of their lies and the incredible influence their ad revenue holds over the content they provide. I'm not worried about journalists of integrity; I'm worried about censorship. And I get my news from those who refuse to be censored. And that is a disturbingly small world.

This is the best advice for a starter. To learn copy you don't need to read about copy (books, courses...), you need to read copy - by Kyle Milligan from Copy Squad (an underrated copy genius) My advice for everyone looking to start it would be: learn the basics, then make it a daily practice to analyze real copies from good writers, practice creativity (try to tweak what you have analyzed), and WRITE A FULL COPY.

ChatGPT has a bad taste in word choice, it's suitable for fiction, but if you have good taste in copywriting, you can use it to get drafts and edit them. I don't use GPT to write; I use it in my research, to brainstorm pain points, selling points, or whatever I lack in the domain, but for the writing, I do it myself to sound human and connect with my audience.

It's been years since I commented on anything. You deserved a good one. I've been in marketing, advertising for 30 years. We've made a lotta websites! I've been freshening up my knowledge and just perusing dozens of sites and videos. This hour you've put together - with your VERY clear expertise in the SOUL of "storybranding" and a good website flow - is THE BEST I've ever seen. No fluff. Just the most nuanced clear NEEDS that go into a great site - and really for any marketing. Thanks for your wonderful wise words. They've inspired me and REMINDED me to be simple and follow the outline of marketing story that works best. Thanks a lot for being excellent and a true expert in what you do. It helped me and it's going to help a lot more people. :-)
