What if castle town is located in a dark world that someone tried to open a second dark world within? That could be an explanation as to why darkeners from other worlds can live there - it would be like the void between dark worlds. I just thought of this when you pointed out characters like Seam and Jevil appearing to be located outside of that reality, and how castle town might either be like that as well, or be the boundary of reality and the void. Actually, what if that "out-of-bounds" space is where the cliffs are? it would explain many oddities of the cliffs, and how darkeners can exist in castle town without turning to stone - in this example, the town would be the borderlands that blends these realities together, and as such is universal, unlike the other dark worlds. Or maybe it's the original dark world, and all other dark worlds are mere copies or something that don't get the "soul" of the world or something like that right? This comment is a mess of loosely connected thoughts at this point.

To be fair, the spare classroom is right next to the closet and connected via a door, so it makes sense for Jevil's basement to connect, but not Spamton's (considering that that dark world is in a completely different building). Also, what if Jevil's basement is actually below the floor boards, and what if Castle Town is like that as well (like in a small space between the floor and the ground)? That'd explain the candles, and also the cliffs to an extent - maybe there was something suspicious in the closet prior to the dark world there being created. It also explains why Kris and Susie fall down - there's falling under the floor boards. Also, what if Spamton's basement is also underneath the floor? Or perhaps underneath the desks, considering the brown walls and having to turn something off (like unplugging something). Just some extra thoughts I wanted to throw in. :)
