Good clip, a lot of Holomem have talked about it but it continually takes people by surprise so obviously it needs to be shown more! All sorts of Holomem whether JP/ID/EN or Live/Stars have spoken on this subject and it doesn't matter whether it's a cover or original, they cost a lot to make and they tend not to break even on them. They're labours of love because they want to do them and give back to the community. People like Okayu and Marine have commented on the sheer amount of money some of their MVs have cost due to the animation and such.

If you can afford it, merch and voice packs seem to be the best way to support them. If you can't afford it, then just try your best to engage with the content. Comment, like, share, or geek out about it on social media. Just stay honest with yourself about what you can afford to give.

Thank you for the clip, hearing about these sorts of things is always really interesting to me! On the EN side, Hakka's talked a lot about the cost of making covers as well. I don't recall the exact amounts he's mentioned, but I believe it's usually around a few grand USD. However, he's also said that the biggest single expense in his MVs is typically art! I assume it would be at least partially up to the talent what visuals they want for a cover release, so the relative proportion of art expenses in the entire budget likely varies per talent. It really surprised me to hear that, to be honest! Personally, an MV's visuals/art is something I just consider a nice bonus to the experience of the song. The vast majority of my interactions with a cover or orisong are going to be through just listening; I'd never bat an eye if their songs were released with less art or even just a still text-based graphic or something. I figure bands/musicians usually have one or two singles per album with a full MV, and the rest get uploaded to YT as audio tracks with a still background, so I don't really expect such intense visual experiences from every single song release. Of course, if it's a part of the experience that the talent really loves including, that's what's most important!

It's not really surprising, knowing how little Spotify pays artists, so KZbin must be around the same. I think the real benefit only appears when it goes viral, in the form of exposure

yeah, as suspected, unless the cover/original songs go viral (with at least a few millions views), they should not be seen as a "way to earn money", but more of a "marketing tool" - many brands burn HUGE budgets just for this purpose.

merch, probably also superchats and gifted memberships, meet and greet appearances, ect. if im correct, holo also gives their talents some sort of base salery too. i think multiple talents have talked about how expensive song projects can be, i even recall marine talking about how her songs don't earn her as much as you'd expect it to be, so covers and to an extent originals are usually made with the intent of love and to give back to their communities rather than to actually earn money back. but these songs do can help promote the talent and bring in a lot of people to watch their content, i know i found holostars through their music too

It really depends on the company. Nijisanji keeps 95% of the money from their merch, but livers keep most of super-chats and membership money. Former top talents in Nijisanji EN are known to have earned 1+ million USD in the 2 years they spent in the company. Hololive pays their talents a salary, plus a performance bonus. As far as I know, it's never been divulged or leaked how much talents earn from merch, superchats or memberships. But they're definitely earning very well, since investors, during earning calls, have questioned if Cover really needs to pay so much to talents (and Yagoo said that offering "satisfactory" monetary compensation to talents is a top priority for the company). Indies keep 100% of all revenue, but also have to pay everything out of their own pocket. Plus, getting noticed as an indie is extremely hard. The only common factor is that making music, whether original or covers, isn't financially worth it for any of them. At best, they can be good marketing if they go viral, like Shigure Ui's Loli Requiem.

remember that cover pays the talents a salary also. JP law requires them to pay foreign workers a salary equivalent to JP workers, so even if they're paying JP minimum wage, the talents are still getting like 1.2k USD a month. that's not enough to live off of in most US states, especially after taxes, but it's a cushion.

That explained really well why there are lots of indies and small agencies struggling to survive. Songs will help you to get exposure but it is a big investment with no return.
