I bought the Canon5d upon release, at about or around $3,000.00, so it was not a “cheap” camera. Early released models had a problem with the mirror falling off & this happened to my camera. Canon did fix this issue at no cost to me. Autofocus was not a strong point & ISO range was limited & higher ISO’ s showed a lot of noise. Despite these issues, the images produced with this camera were exceptional. Particularly, skin tones were phenomenal. I still remember a High School Senior portrait of a young lady that I captured with the 5D. It was magical. The camera served me well for many years, despite some of its limitations.

Dynamic Range are for amateurs, I know that because I am one. Dynamic range allows you for some mistakes in your exposure as you can fix this in post. Once you stop depending on dyamic range and make less exposure adjustments in post, you are becoming a pro. It's not an exaggeration to say start with high DR cameras and become a pro with any camera especially old ones with less DR.

Thank you for another great video, Skyler! As I watch your videos I constantly ask myself two questions: 1. If you had a D3s, would you still bring all these 3 cameras - or would you just grab a D3s? 2. What are your thoughts on a Nikon Df? Would it replace all these cameras and become your one and only travel camera?
@SkylerKing12 күн бұрын
If I had the D3s, It would likely replace the 6D and D700, but I’d probably still bring the 5D Classic just in case. As for the Df? I desperately want one. I’ve wanted one since they were announced. Of course, without having ever even held one, it’s hard to say if it would live up to the hype and my expectations.

@@SkylerKinghopefully a Df will make its way into your channel. Given the depth of your analysis and practical assessment of camera capabilities, (to me) your review of a Df would matter more than most KZbin reviews. Back in the day both Kai and Lee made fun of the camera - however, this camera deserves a serious and thoughtful review that has become a signature of your channel. You are doing an amazing job! Cheers from Canada! P.S. looking forward to your review of D700. P.P.S. Your tribute to a D3s is one of the most moving videos on photography equipment I have seen in a long time (probably ever). I am reluctant to call it a video; perhaps an ‘essay’ is a more fitting description. Amazing work! Your command of language, complete lack of ‘filler’ words elevate your videos a few levels higher than overwhelming majority of KZbinrs. 👍

Maybe I could add some thoughts - I have a D200, D700, D3s and a Df. Regarding only choosing the D3s; Yes and no. The D3s is a fantastic beast which I really just trust the most. It's been with me for 7 years and even withstood very snowy weather (with a weather sealed lens, that is) and I can simply just depend on it. However, I think it depends on what kind of shooting I want to do. If shooting conditions involve a lot of low-light situations and bad weather, then I guess the answer is Yes. This camera with It's grip and bulkyness inspire me to "go all in photo mode" when the purpose is almost solely to take photographs, so to speak. If I would just be walking around and wanted to take pictures now and then, I would not bring this camera though. The D700: This is the camera I would bring (with and without the grip) if the scenes wouldn't involve too much shooting in low light. In my mind there is just something more pleasing about it's output compared to the D3s; call it artistic, more paint-brush like or more classic. The colors and the files just does have "something" that I don't quite find in the D3s (although it's close) Since you can choose to have a battery grip or not, it also blends in better and is more inspiring to bring when you want to take photographs now and then. With a grip, it can become a similar experience to the D3s, although the D3s has this superior feel and control in almost all aspects. The Df: this is the casual, low-weight camera that just inspires me to use old ai or Pre-ai lenses and some AF-D lenses. Coupled with a DK-17M the feel, sound and everything is just fantastic. The low-light capabilities is just insane, aswell as the output and dynamic range. However, i would most certainly bring this one if the shooting style was pretty casual and low-paced and I would definitely feel more inclined to "baby" the camera a lot more than if It would bring the D700 or D3s. Compared to the D3s, it is barely noticeable with a small prime. The Live view is also fantastic on this one and the battery life is surprisingly good. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them!

Being middle aged, I’m fortunate to have used many digital cameras over the years. The 5D classic is the only one that I’ve held on to and still use on a regular basis. The 5D’s sensor is special, it hits a sweet spot between pixel size and density and produces beautiful, creamy, pin-sharp files. If you can’t make good images with this camera or need ‘more dynamic range’, I suspect equipment is not your issue.

That sent me into such a panic mode after I got it - I think I have 30 batteries now, just to not throw that camera into trash while doing a job if that would happen to me and I would not be prepared. Oh, that’s awesome. I actually told my wife that I want to visit Osaka (I’ve still never been). On the sensor note, I have heard some sources say that Panasonic made the sensor. But other sources say that Nikon made it. I recently got curious about it and looked again, only to find that there is still debate about it. On the Wikipedia page(s), it says that Nikon made the sensor. When I check the old release information about the D700 (and the D3, etc), it says that Nikon made the sensor. Nikonrumors claims Nikon made it. But, Google’s AI says that Panasonic made it and so do several other sources. I’m not sure why there is so much conflicting information, but I guess that just adds to the mystique of the D700, lol.

Thanks so much for this video! Really enjoyed all your thoughts. That podmic is a good mic I have that as well. 😀 How do you find mixing and matching photos from the different cameras? Is it jarring how different they look? I’m considering mixing a Nikon in with my Sony gear as a second camera for weddings and not sure if it’ll look weird. What bag do you use for over the shoulder? Looking for a good one myself. Regarding the d700 do you feel like the photos are the same rendering as the d3s? From what I’ve read the d3s is the same as the d3 with better light sensitivity, and the d3 is the same sensor etc as the d700. Ken Rockwell (debatable source I know) has pictures of the d3 and d700 which look identical as well, although they’re of a tree line so who knows if a more nuanced situation would bring out some differences. The reason I’m interested in that is the d3 has dual card slots which is useful in my situation, but I’d love to see the rendering style of the d700. Thanks!
@SkylerKing16 күн бұрын
From what I understand, the D3 and the D700 have the same sensor, but the image processing is tuned a bit differently for each camera. I was actually just flipping through my old “Nikon D700 Superbook” last night and they were showing various types of photos taken in different situations with the D700 and D3 being compared to each other. The skin tones were warming and more pleasing with the D700 in my opinion. The D3 might have had slightly better high ISO performance, but it honestly seemed pretty negligible. The D3s is a departure from both cameras. Despite the similar name, it has a completely different sensor (as well as a few other parts) and has been tuned much differently. It has beautiful rendering which I love, but it not the same as either the D700 or the D3, for example.

Before learning photography, I used Nikon and Canon DSLRs that I borrowed from a few friends. Later, when I wanted to seriously step into photography, I was impressed by the mft system and bought a second-hand Olympus em 10 mark 3. The shutter and aperture control is incredible. I haven't used anything better than this so far, and the fact that it's a small body seems to help me create different compositions. Of course, I would like it to be full frame, but I don't have the money to buy a Leica, and I don't think it will be that comfortable to use. At first, I had dji 15mm (leica 15mm), olympus 45mm f1.8, lumix 45 150. After my crazy obsession with zooming everything, I discovered how incredible the 30mm is. Now I only keep 15mm, it can be narrow sometimes but it's not a big deal. At one point, I had the opportunity to try the Fujifilm X100VI. When I picked it up, I realized that it wasn't for me.

I will use de-noise in LR to help with lower light shots and it is really helpful - the RAW files from the TG are pretty flexible for being such a tiny sensor.
