This concept is wrong for this question (1440 men had sufficient food for 32 days. How many men may leave so that the same food be sufficient for 40 days when the ration is increased by 11/2 times?(hint:The 1st element is 1 and the 2nd is 3/2 in the ratio for ration.) as we cant use direct relation in case of men and food. please guide

This is how it is: Quantity of water in both cases: 3x/7 and 5x/9 take water quantity equal: 3x/7 + 5 = 5/9 (x+5) x = 17.5 Alcohol quantity: 4x/7 = 10

both mathematically and logically wrong solution. Yes the answer is right, but the process is illogical. where you assumed quantity of alcohol as 4x. it cannot be. from ratio, quantity of alcohol = 4x/7. the most basic rule of ratios.
