How could Adam think God good when he didn't know good and evil? Line 414. In Milton's story God really sounds incompetent. He seems incapable of creating beings that do what he made them to do. Satan rebels, Gabriel has one job - to guard Eden - and he fails to keep out the one and only intruder, Adam and Eve disobey. God screws up creating man so badly that he has to wipe them off the face of the Earth and start over. How can an omniscient god make so many blunders? Is it because of free will? Couldn't God create a being with free will who is not only capable of choosing his own path but always makes the right choice because of his basic nature? I supposedly have free will and I choose to never torture small animals. Couldn't God make only people who will make the same choice? They are all free to choose to torture but none will.
