Yes, I prefer to work with certified contractors who can take care of permit process rather than taking ownership of that task myself

Yes you can run your own business even without this course, you can practice design but if anything structural is related to project then you’ll have to contract project out to certified architectural designers

Thank you for watching! I always conduct a free discovery call with my client to get an idea of what they're looking for so that I'm prepared with ideas when I visit their house for the paid consultation. Hope that helps!

Hi Sarah, do you photograph your finished projects? Could you do a video on what softwares you use to edit the images, settings if you use your phone, etc.? I am enrolled in the IDI program and I wish they had either a masterclass or advanced module for this. Getting a photographer after each project would not be cost effective, especially in my area. Thank you!

Majority of the time I hire professional interior photographers to capture the project - it's always worth investing in to make your portfolio look professional and cut above the rest.

Im a customer in Southern California searching for an interior decorator. How can i ensure the decorator doesn't upcharge on the furniture/accessories i select? Do i ask for actual invoices from the retailer? If i trust they have access to furnishings at a designer discount, i want that discount but will pay for their services/work hours. My friend got scammed by a designer who bought stuff from HomeGoods and world market and upcharged without her knowledge!She found the exact items at these stores for less.

With all due respect, though things may be available to the public, you are paying someone to piece things together. You are paying for intellectual property of their vision. Yes, you can get the stuff from home goods and all that, but your designer had to go get it. It’s similar to DoorDash. You could go get the food, but you hired someone to pick it up so they charge for that whatever that may be. There is so much that goes into it that people do not see. Sourcing takes a lot of time. I’m not saying your friend is a liar or invalidating their experience. However, at the same time, up-charge is part of the industry and it really isn’t a scam. Just wanted to give prospective.

@@svorachack1991 I was going to said the same, up charging it’s part of the business, there’s a lot to do, in that case will be a poor business without profit, in every country the designers get a profit of the items they are recommending in some cases they sell to the client directly…what’s the point to get a designer and get their discounts and complain about they are making profit for that? It’s not charity it’s a business. It’s so weird to me when clients said this things about scam or they want to know how much they paid for that, in that case go by yourself and additional pay the designers time. US clients sounds penny pincher, my international clients knows the value of.

Hey, this was very informative! Quick question, I can’t seem to find this answer anywhere. With IDI being accredited in only DDA-specifically for Canada, does that ultimately mean I won’t be recognized and/or qualified to work outside of Canada. I primarily work in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia and was hoping to apply for an agency in one of those states. I assume it’ll just depend on the firm, but wanted to ask incase you have some insight on this. Thanks!

Thanks for watching - IDI is an internationally recognized course and I believe they collaborate with various associations from different countries for accreditations. I would recommend emailing their support team and they'll be able to confirm your questions regarding where you are located.

As a single mom and 48 years old I am only have 12 more classes left to get my BA in Business with a Marketing certificate. I want to become an Interior Designer but the thought of going back to University and taking on more crazy loans is not something I want at my age especially. Thank you for this video! I was looking at NYIAD but to be honest it looks kind of junkie and is more expensive.

i have access to the best moving service, i own it lol. i want to expand to interior design. so, would you say I need to be in residential? i mean obviously. i want to be the guy who tells you how to place things in the house because we have an eye for that after 10+ years working with realtors and interior designers. we are just not sure where to start. It can be if you are making the right connections and taking the right projects. You have to learn how to establish a profitable pricing structure so that you can make money from taking on 2 to 3 quality jobs in a year vs. taking on volume and being stressed. So I’m actually doing my education through the Interior Design Institute as well, although I’m in the US. Once completed, can we call ourselves Interior Designers or would we call ourselves Interior Decorators until we take the exam through the CIDQ?

That's correct, to be able to approve drawings in which structural elements are involved you should completed your exam to be certified to do so.
