The Masoretic texts were written 9th century and later… by that time the tradition was already in place to not say The Name. The vowel markers were for the title Adoni to remind the reader to not say God’s name but instead to say Adoni. If you look at Psalm 144:15 you clearly see that YHWH has the vowels of adonai. Most don't understand how the shewa worked in Hebrew. It's default pronunciation was of patach. In Psalm 68:7 the word sorariim 'prisoners' appears with a hatef patach under the first resh, but in the same word in verse 19 it has simple shewa. The shewa was pronounced like hatef patach whenever it began a syllable. In Psalm 144:15 hatef patach is written to prevent the reader from reading the shewa as silent and rendering the false pronunciation shedonai. Writing hatef patach ensures it is pronounced she-adonai 'whom the LORD is'. In all other cases where YHWH is by itself a simple shewa is written because it is at the beginning of the word and begins a syllable, thus it is impossible to read it as silent and it is understood to be vocalic, so it was not necessary to write it's precise quality as patach.
