Hi Janet, thanks so much for your video! I am pretty anxious about trying this on my kitty, he starts insulin on Monday. He is the type of cat that won’t let me clip his nails without a major fuss! I’m feeling a little more optimistic after watching how you do it, I think not making a big deal about it will keep my cat calmer. Hoping lots of treats also help!

Hi! Definitely they can tell if we are stressed or nervous. Maybe put on some music to help yourself stay relaxed. CC was never a fan of nail cuts either but had no problem with shots or insulin. The last six months or so we were giving her sub q fluids at home too. We were really lucky she was so chill with everything. Most of my current cats would not be such good patients. Haha

@@snakecharm13 it makes me feel even better that CC wasn’t a fan of nail trims (and look at her in this video)! Hoping my 20 lb cat is like that. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment- it makes me feel calmer about what we have to do. I do think my cat will put up with the shot because it’s super quick- it’s still the prick in the ear that concerns me most. The worst that will happen with the shots is that he will avoid me. I could still see him trying to fight me on the ear prick initially. I’ve gone the subQ fluids route with another cat, but I have no doubt that my current kitty would never stay still that long. Question: I read that insulin shots should NOT be given in the scruff of the neck, your take on this?
@snakecharm13
@snakecharm13 Жыл бұрын
@@MakeupMaven_SusanJane where did you see not to do it in the scruff? We switched up spots in the scruff left, right, center, a little forward, a little back. Some even do it in the flank area but that's seems more sensitive. Have you joined fdmb yet? If not please do. Lots of people there to help.
@MakeupMaven_SusanJane
@MakeupMaven_SusanJane Жыл бұрын
@@snakecharm13 actually fdmb site’s article “how to give injections to cats” cautions that you should not inject insulin in the scruff because absorption can be erratic due to very poor blood supply there. There’s also a debate thread on the message board about it. I’d not seen that advice anywhere else, and most videos showing how to give insulin show it in the scruff! Certainly giving subQ fluids is almost always done there because it doesn’t hurt at all. Your video certainly shows the scruff, so I assume that your method has been effective in getting insulin into your cats body? I’m asking because I know that dosing my difficult kitty in the scruff would be much more tolerable. Your thoughts!
@snakecharm13
@snakecharm13 Жыл бұрын
@@MakeupMaven_SusanJane I never had a problem using the scruff. Like I said I moved around the exact spot to prevent a thickening of the skin from scar tissue. Esp in the beginning I'd say do whatever is easiest. I have her shots twice a day for five years and it was not a problem.

Being able to do BG tests at home is an absolute must when insulin is involved, for both humans and non-humans. I'm happy to say that Cookie has been in diabetic remission since April 2022. My cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes and I've just started him on an insulin regimen ( 1 unit 2@ day ). When I asked my vet, how I would be monitoring his glucose levels to see if the insulin was actually working, they gave me diabetes urinalysis test strips. It's the same type of test strips that people use to test their glucose levels, but the vet said it works equally well with cats. There's no sticking of any needles into blood vessels. It's like a pH strip, you insert the end of the strip into your cats urine (I use his urine ball he creates when he uses the litter box) the tip of the strip contains a paper strip that reacts to both the glucose and ketone levels. It changes color when it comes into contact with his urine. There's a color chart on the side of the container that holds the strips. You just have to match the color and it will give you a range of both glucose and ketone levels. It may be a less painful option for anxious cat owners. I would definitely check with your vet to see if the urinalysis test strips are appropriate for your cat. The severity of your cat"s diabetes may warrant taking a blood test instead. However, for those who might be interested, the strips I use is called: Vet One - VetStix 2 Diabetes Urinalysis test strips. Hope this helped.
@snakecharm13
@snakecharm13 3 жыл бұрын
timothy kaleiopu the problem with this is the urine test strips don't tell you what the level is at that moment, it will just tell you if there is glucose that has spilled over into the urine (over about 220-250) in the last 24 hours or so. It definitly won't tell you if your cat is running too low and in hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia can be deadly. The strips are good for testing ketones though, although I also prefer a blood meter for testing ketones.
@BBBoy990
@BBBoy990 3 жыл бұрын
@@snakecharm13 Thank you for your response, if there's a more accurate way to test his glucose level I'll let my Vet know. I was trying to be less obtrusive in taking other tests, but if is the best way to do it, I'll do it, to keep my cat healthy. Thanks again,
@BBBoy990
@BBBoy990 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the urinalysis test only confirms the presence of glucose that has overflowed into his urine, not the blood. A blood test will allow you to determine the actual mg/dl level, which is crucial in determining the dosage and frequency of the insulin. I acquiesced and invested in a glucose meter. Drawing a blood sample from my cat's ear initially, was stressful for me, but fortunately not for my cat, he's a real trouper. The readings are a lot more accurate and reveal more info that my vet can use to help get my cat to a point were diabetic remission is a possibility. All of this poking and prodding may appear traumatizing to you or your cat/dog, but if it increases quality of life and longevity, it's the least we can do.

My Vet didn’t push home testing besides doing the blood glucose curve 5-7 days after starting the insulin at home since he gets so stressed at the Vet office and she wanted to get true results. After doing my own research and remembering my friends struggles with her own diabetic cat I am definitely going to do testing before each shot. My friend followed the Vet’s advise on how much insulin to give but they weren’t doing testing every day so her cat became Hypoglycemic and ended getting so sick he passed away. I have read similar stories and wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if I knew there had been something more I could have done for him. Thanks for showing how easy it is! Thank you. My vet said it’s not a normal practice to test them. I didn’t even get shown how to administer the shot bc they don’t let anyone in the office due to the covid. It makes me feel like I don’t have a support system from my vet. I’m brand new at this diabetic stuff. But my instinct is to test before giving insulin. It’s been a few weeks since the diagnosis and I haven’t seen a whole lot of improvement. He is on 2 units 2x daily. Where’d you pick up that pet meter? Do you always give the same amount of units or do you have a number range system. I always feed the cats wet food but the diabetic cat (Joey) has always been picky and wouldn’t eat much of the wet food so I have dry food for when he comes and ask for it. He would go to his food storage area and meow till someone fed him the dry food. Since the diabetic behavior started he doesn’t come and ask for his food. So I’m a bit stress about his eating behavior he has been just nic picking the food I put out. I love my baby I’ve had him for 14 yrs since he was a little tiny itty bit 2 week old baby. He was a foster baby that never made it back to the animal shelter. and I’m gonna stop Here, I just realized I’m writhing a book.I’ll take any tips that anyone might have on diabetic cats.

Hey there! I got the alpha meter on amazon. The strips are pricey so a lot of people opt for a human meter. My vet said "some test, most don't" and went on to explain the scary hypo symptoms to look for. For to say I didn't get good sleep and was up in the middle of the night constantly checking her. That's when I decided I had to learn to test at home. My cat was diagnosed 4 years ago... Testing has saved her life several times. She was in remission for a year then came out of it. Turns out she has a pituitary tumor causing it so she's a high dose kitty. Insulin is not a set it and forget it thing which is why testing is important. There's an amazing group of love for you to join that can help you with dosing questions and any other cat health concerns. Www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB. For food wet is best. There are only a handful of dry foods under 10 percent carb. (Dr elsley's clean protein chicken, young again zero carb, and epigen 90) Most people feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods. I feed weruva to cc and ff to my others.

@@snakecharm13 No, Dusty is far from a good patient. I make a point of giving her many "good touches" several times a day so she doesn't think I'm gonna stick her every time I approach her but she still is not very happy with me. Hopefully this is a temporary thing and can be fixed with diet changes. Until now, I hadn't realized how many treats I was giving all my fur girls as they still expect something every time I enter the kitchen. I keep telling them we have new rules now but eventually they'll adapt. Thanx again!

Great demo, got my alphaTRAK today for my min pin dog who was diagnosed 2 days ago, her BG was 611mg/dL. The lancet device is evil, can't get it to work even after reading and watching demos-its useless and loud so I will do your version. Just an fyi, original neosporin is ok for pets but NOT the version that comes with pain reliever, its actually bad for them.

Wintry Kiss poor kitty. Put a little neosporin ointment with pain relief on the ears. You must be hitting the vein. If you avoid the vein the ears will be fine. I test 4-5 times a day and rarely is there a noticeable mark. If you'd like more help with testing or techniques to get your cat accustomed to it, join us on Www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB

To be clear avoid hitting the vein correct? Hit between the vein and outer edge of ear correct?

Would have been better to see it in action to confirm but thank you for the cool extras you have in your pack. She looks like my furbaby. He's chill too

Officer Meyer not sure what you want to see... Just get the drop going and put it strip into it. If you're using the alpha you want to do one of the pointy protruding spots on the side. If you are using a human meter the suck it up on the end of the strip.
